Leonard Cohen is a master of simple melodies. His music (up until I'm Your Man at least) is as bare as it can be but always packs a punch even with simple chord progressions and his best songs are as catchy as any Top 40 hit. His lyrics paint pictures the way almost no one else does; they're like impressionistic paintings of humans, emotions, relationships, and the self. The religious lyrics he sometimes includes are always appropriate, used as metaphors and lessons rather than for the purposes of evangelizing.
