I think it was partly because that was the big popular thing at the time, so of course the real metalheads had to hate it. Also there were some legit awful bands. But I've been going back and revisiting some of those old albums recently and enjoying them a lot. I've mostly been hitting stuff like SOAD, Deftones, Mudvayne, etc. but I want to do a deep dive soon. I was listening to Snot the other day

In 90s nu metal was hated so much , in high school it was safer to say you listened to back streets boy then it was to admit to listening to nu metal.

It was the new thing and older guard of alternative and metal fans wanted to gatekeep what was true "metal" and "alternative". The hip-hop element of nu metal wasn't welcomed by hip-hop fans. You got that plus the image associated with it and no wonder it was hated. Same thing happened with emo in mid 00s and then brostep in early 10s.

I agree with the emo gatekeeping because it literally was being branded on pop punk and such bands. I liked a lot of the bands but I didn't like the blanket statement as much as the bands themselves didn't

Ironically it was nu metal, and Korn particularly, that got me interested in hip-hop, which now comprises like 90% of the music I listen to

Not all of the bands even incorporated hip hop style lyrics
