American exceptionalism is a part of it - It's only enough that they see him say it, not what the actual international community thinks about the US lately. Why do they defend his poor personal actions? I don't really have a good answer for that. They vaguely agree with him on a few concepts, so they now feel like they are on his "side" just as they feel like he is on theirs. Some of it may also be the media they consume. They are staunchly pro-Trump, such as the 700 club and others.
