Welcome to the King of Fighters 2020 (NOT MERCS) Simulated Character Battle Tournament!

The game is simple. The two* listed characters are placed in an (imaginary) location with a variety of (imaginary) environments, kind of like a picture in a child's schoolbook that describes different types of geological features. Within a ten mile radius, there is an (imaginary) urban downtown, exurbs, plains, snow-clad mountains at the edge, dry plains, etc. Fighters start wherever is most appropriate for them, but feel increasingly compelled to seek out their opponent and fight. Strong-willed fighters can try to hold out in their chosen environment for longer... eventually, all will succumb and actively search for the other to battle.

To participate, just vote in bold for whichever character you believe will win. Giving reasoning is optional, but please be polite and read what others have said and carefully make your decision. I'll ping the nominators (they can opt out) to give arguments if they wish.

Pit is fast enough to fly into space in a few seconds and dodge Phosphora's lightning, how fast is Aang?

oh yeah, should decide if Pit gets the three sacred treasures here. The shield in particular can block energy attacks, which probably includes fire and lightning

IMO Aang can't use the Avatar State unless he gets lucky like he did against Ozai there

Why wouldn't Aang have access to the Avatar State? He has full control over it after his fight with Ozai.

How much of Palutena's help are we giving Pit? Because that is literally the difference between "can fly into space and doesn't have to control his flight path" and "literally cannot fly". Like, Uprising has I think only one segment where Pit is not directly aided/controlled by either Palutena or Viridi, so it's not like something he doesn't have, but it is, explicitly, outside help.

My interpretation of the scene was that it was a temporary unblocking of his chakra that would require much more meditation and training to gain permanent control over. The alternative is a horrifically stupid cop-out

whatever we use for these two it should be consistent between them, don't give Aang free avatar state and have Pit stuck without flight

almost all of Pit's powers come from Palutena, if we stuck him with only his own powers he'd probably lose to George Costanza

I think the main thing is if Pit can finish Aang before his flight runs out, which... maybe?

This isn't exactly to fair to Pit, Palutena's generally not helping him too much during land battles and he fights powerful opponents.

yeah, too much of an exaggeration. Palutena does give him most of powers and weapons though.

speaking of his powers I think the black hole one is a big deal here. it doesn't do damage but it holds the target in place, and if Aang tried to bend anything to get out of it that would just get sucked up too

Pit has a wide range of powers too like increased speed, homing shots/shooting through walls, and teleporting. there's a long list

Even given thinking it on a fair degree, I think Aang has the better tools to deal with Pit versus the reverse. There's too much choice given to Aang, given a huge variety of potential locations that the fight could occur.

what are the ways Aang wins here, I can't see it. Pit is fast enough to avoid fire, water, air and lightning, and strong enough to shatter stone with his weapons. Aang can't bloodbend (pretty sure? but this doesn't sound like something he would use much even if he could) and he doesn't have much in the way of actual combat training while Pit is basically Palutena's entire army on his own. For what's been said about Aang I don't see how he actually wins this.

In earnest, I think Pit is the better fighter. If this is Dark Pit or full Pit + Palu, there's no question that he takes it - actual control of flight with the ability to just passively guide himself while he shoots homing arrows of light? Yeah, that's absolutely overwhelming.

The issue is... Pit's an idiot. The kid had to banter with HIMSELF in order to keep himself sane when he was unable to contact one of his goddesses for ten minutes. He stumbles into every fight and just barely is kept from harm via Palutena's Guidence. He's actively told about his foes while fighting them in order to figure out how to counter them. Meanwhile, there's the possibility of energybending removing Pit's connection with Palutena based on how it's described. That would absolutely ruin Pit, both mentally and combat-wise. And even before it gets to that point, airbending's an effective way to limit Pit's mobility, which is probably his greatest advantage.

Like if Pit had 80 more IQ points I would feel super confident voting for him, but... nah.

Also as far as the black hole ability, I'm tempted to say Aang's Avatar state would be able to break him out of that. Something something chakras energybending that I'd look more into if I had the time right now, but I know for sure we've seen the Avatar state no-sell bloodbending, and it allows him to harness the abilities of all the past Avatars, as well as take a sort of out-of-body state

it doesn't really matter for this match now obviously, but Aang's energybending having all of these uses that aren't suggested in the show seems a bit spotty to me, I could see that turning into a headache later so I thought I'd say something now
