I love you Vipey but the Best Picture winners for the better part of the decade have ranged from good to excellent. The only "Oscar bait" winner recently was Green Book(trash). Before that you have to go back to The King's Speech (actually a good movie) or Crash (garbage).

And for those saying stuff like 1917 or Bravehart wouldn't eligible for Best Picture.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that if movies like those (focusing just on straight white men, especially historical films) would be accepted if their crews weren't simply all white, all men. I won't assume these checkpoints are as rigid as some people make them out to be.

I mean, not that I cared about award shows before, but here's another reason for me not to start.

Diversity for the sake of diversity is and will always be rubbish.

It's good to encourage diversity. It's silly to say, "You must be this diverse to qualify for best picture."

That said, the Oscars gave Shakespeare in Love the Best Picture nod over Saving Private Ryan. They are by no means a measurement of quality. For the past three decades, they've been about what lets them pat themselves on the back.

How do people sleep at night knowing that the only reason they got their job is because they're black/gay/deaf/whatever, rather than through their own merits? I'd hate having to show up at work every day just to meet a quota.

Mostly The Joker, but also some movies which probably technically count as "diverse" but are clearly meant for a middle aged or elderly bourgeois white audience.

Snide jokes aside, this isn't going to solve the problem with Hollywood - including its award ceremonies - misrepresenting the full diversity of American life, or of the cinematic arts. All this will do is, perhaps, convince people who make Oscar bait movies to have a diverse cast and maybe make it about a fitting subject - more movies about slavery, and jazz musician biopics - but still meant for old white people. If you want actual representation, you have to see and support independent and foreign films. Independent American films are already diverse as fuck. Where were the Oscars for Meek's Cutoff, In the Family, Columbus, Leave No Trace, The Last Black Man In San Francisco? Wherever those imaginary Oscars are, its not because the Academy isn't "woke" enough that these movies aren't getting their due recognition.

This is what I would prefer. I mean I'm not going to be upset about any efforts to be inclusive but if the Academy just turned it's attention to the Indies and kinda force the studios' hands as a result would be better.

Just look at the MLB and the Negro Leagues. The best players were black. But once they were allowed to break through, it forced the hands of the owners. I feel the same would happen with the Oscars.

Bong, Peele, Gerwig, McQueen, the Three Amigo's breaking through at the Oscars has shown promise but what the Oscars really need to do is just open up more membership. Diversify your voters and your nominees will follow suit.

Also, they really really need to stop patting themselves on the back when someone does break through. "Rachel Morrison is the first woman to be nominated for Best Cinematography!" is inappropriate. Celebrate her achievement while also highlighting the fact that there have been hundreds of talented and worthy women behind the camera for a century and the fact it's taken that long is a shame. >_>

That was a great interview. So many white "allies" are missing the point on representation. They think you check off a box and you win because it pisses off white people on the right, but it's not worth celebrating at all. Minorities want meaningful roles and meaningful representation. Being a checkbox isn't a victory. I mean shit Gone with the Wind would pass this test. Is that a great example of diversity in film?

Maybe this will spice up the variety. I'm tired of slave movies and WW2 movies getting nominated.

This had me curious on how many of each have been nominated since the expansion.

Slave movies: 12 Years a Slave and Django Unchained

WW2 movies: Jojo Rabbit, Dunkirk, Darkest Hour, Hacksaw Ridge, Imitation Game, The King's Speech, and Inglorious Basterds.

The slave movies couldn't be further apart.
The WW2 movies: JoJo Rabbit, Dunkirk and Basterds can just be tossed out since neither of those three are really similar to the rest. The other four I can see the similarities.

Also WW1 has the same amount of representation as slave movies: 1917 and War Horse.
LGBTQ have nine representatives
Comic cooks movies have two.
And films with rape as a central focus have two!
