There does need to be in an era of overexposure though

If AEW wants to run 1980s-era angle-driven TV with squash matches and just the quarterly PPVs for main events then sign me up, but thats not happening

I don't disagree with that. But as Tom mentioned, I don't often choose them as my first choice.

I've been watching wrestling for probably entirely too wrong by now. I need a little more than generic foreign heel to do anything for me at this point. I've seen way too many to care about the next one.

I don't even mind basic either! I just want people to have a bit of personality that isn't stare angrily and then shout in a foreign accent. You can be basic while having a personality.

Kip Sabian and Penelope Ford are basic characters that work. They are over the top in love with each other with too much PDA. It's basic but still has personality. As an act, you don't need a primer to get it. He comes out with a chick he's super into and they help each other cheat to win.

I just think it's only a few small but important tweaks to have Miro The Gamer also clearly be a dude who will punch you in the mouth, as well as a likeable charismatic guy.

But mostly I just reject the idea that Rusev Day was any better than Fandango and that people singing your little song really means anything for business

If Fandango didn't immediately say "Fandangoing is stupid and you're all trash for doing it" immediately when it was being done outside of wrestling, I think his character could have really caught on, especially since people were really coming around on him leading to his injury. How you don't just shift gears to make him a face at this point is wild to me to see where that momentum would have taken him.

It's a different thing but his song got to number 2 in the singles chart! And Rusev had the advantage of already being presented as a star before the Rusev Day thing. There's differences still but I do mostly think those two things were over in the same way

I mean, that's obviously what it was, but it seems like a false equivalency to say that fans chanting Rusev Day to show their support for Rusev getting a bigger push means that the majority wanted him to be pushed with the Rusev Day gimmick specifically.

Every promo he's had has been a serious one about how he's the best and he can't wait to fight. In his lone match so far he hasn't done any comedy.

I feel like if he is supposed to be a comedy character he would have said or done something in his three appearances to make me laugh by now.
