Which option is better?

Curious which strategy people are more into, considering how Nintendo's been doing things this year.

I feel like "releases today" typically gets the most positive reaction.

I like surprise releases.

Which i am firmly set to believe is Half Life 3's strategy to just appear on steam one day. Not even have a headline or anything. Its just there in the newly released column and push away by new games within the hour.

The sooner the better. That way I don't spend a ton of time looking for any details about the game.

I like hype personally.

But most games probably don't deserve it. That said 4 years is excessive for any game.

No need to tell me ahead of time, since I will almost never purchase something upon release. If it's not at least 50% off on Steam, no deal.

I prefer to be able to order a pizza when a game is announced and be able to play it before the pizza gets here.

6-11 months

any less and they risk limiting the title's reach, any more and the production's probably strugging (or they just announced it way too early)

For small games, announce and release it right away, "...And it's out... Right now!" is always a good way to build hype, though it doesn't really work for bigger games as they depend on pre-orders.

For bigger games, two months to a year. Don't go over 18 months. It's nice to know what's coming out to make plans and so on, but multi-year hype cycles are both annoying for people who are excited for a game, and can actually lead people to make purchases in error - more people than you might think bought a PS3 because of The Last Guardian.

4 years is a bit excessive, but personally, I like knowing about games as far-out as possible. It's neat to see them evolve from early trailers to the final product, hype cycles are fun with bigger releases, and it's just nice to have an idea of what's in the pipeline.

I would take anything over Nintendo's "Johnny Tightlips" approach from this year.
