I've been cooling on Nolan a lot recently, but regardless, this insistence that he's somehow special and he's going to ring in the return to cinemas with his masterpiece are just kind of gross.

Couldn't even begin to imagine actually going to a theater before 2021 at minimum at this point.

I think it's mostly because of how damn expensive it is, they'll say anything to lose as little money as possible

It would be one thing if it was in theaters and streaming, and they just wanted people to know they had the option (still nuts to go), but it's ONLY in theaters.

Hopefully the fact that this movie is doing well below expectations will make Hollywood realize they've jumped the gun.

I'm surprised they even managed to get it into theaters at all.

There was also New Mutants as theater-only, but apparently the only reason they did that was part of the deal with buying FOX is their movies got full theater releases, and they couldn't stream it elsewhere because HBO already has the streaming rights.

AFAIK all the big movies coming out in the next couple months are theaters-only too. Don't think Nolan's the only one.

The thing is most of the world is in a state where it's fine to go to the cinema. I went to see Tenet because it's not too ad here now, it felt extremely safe. I'm glad I did because it was good and clearly made for the cinema.

If you're in America, don't go yet. It's clear that cinemas and governments in America were going tor reopen regardless of safety and this film couldn't stay out of there for long. But it'll be in cinemas for ages, wait until it is safe to do so.

Yea that's another thing, I don't reallyyyy begrudge most Non-Americans for going because they, you know, have their shit together way better than America

Marketing teams are just trying to use whatever they can to entice moviegoers. Has nothing to do with Nolan.

I guarantee you a half empty theater is safer than some of the closets I've been forced to teach in the last two weeks.

I mean in the sense that teachers provide a more important service, and that not going to movies reduces the risks those teachers take.

I'm just shitposting and coming at it from the movie industry's perspective.

Also, in general, I don't think movies are any more dangerous than say, going to a mall, which people are definitely doing. The risk would be prolonged exposure, but if theaters are as empty as they appear, it seems much less dangerous than going to a restaurant and eating in close proximity (even outside). So if you're not doing any of those things - great! Keep it up! But I get the feeling that people still think movie theaters are like death sentences or something when on a day to day basis people are engaging in riskier activity.

Oh yeah, I fully agree with that. I don't think they're particularly dangerous in that sense, especially the bigger spaced out modern theaters.

Just anecdotal, but I feel like people had mostly stopped doing this BEFORE the pandemic <_<

In my experience, full indoor meals are quickly going the way of Blockbuster.

When I say "the mall" I don't just mean like Stranger Things

I mean shopping centers/targets/wal-marts and etc.

Well the secret to movie theaters is they operate by selling concessions, so they really are a lot like shitty restaurants. Some like Alamo even double down on being a restaraunt. My gut feeling is that theaters are comparable to risk for a restaraunt, given equal indoor capacity.

movie theatres are a bad idea for the same reason restaurants are - extended exposure among a certain set of people in a confined and poorly ventilated area. places like this are a big driver of infection. eating outside or going to a Wal-Mart don't even compare

I imagine they have to have strict social distancing standards, no? Because dammit, I was planning on seeing this Saturday with my brother but icon's post has me second guessing.

I work with the public everyday (I work at Target), but I guess it is a lot different.
