Isn't it recommend to keep any amount more than that spread throughout different accounts anyway for insurance/liability purposes?

I seem to remember something like that...

But dont they need a reason, Like tax evasion or something, or your money was gotten through illegal means. This guy making it sound like if they feel like it cause they dont like you they can.

I dunno about governments but cops take peoples money all the time through civil forfeiture

All they have to do is claim to think you might commit a crime with your money and they can legally take whatever money you have, even if you arent charged with any crime

in theory, yes. in practice, civil asset forfeiture is trivial for cops to do thru any number of bullshit excuses and it's an enormous fight to get your shit back even if nobody has even accused you of doing anything wrong

heres a good example https://www.ij.org/case/miforf/

yeah. grabbing it directly from your bank account is more rare and will usually be federal agents rahter than local cops, but it's the same legal justification + insanely unfair system for defendants

Technically speaking, I imagine how that often works in practice, given how politically-motivated other investigations have been. It's certainly true of civil forfeiture. If the cop likes you, you can leave with your shit. If you tick him off, he'll keep it and then you'll have to go through a lengthy, uphill battle to prove it was lawfully gained. People talk a lot about police abuse, but we never see protests about that shit. In fact, the only time non-libertarians might learn about it -- besides paying attention to a libertarian or the ACLU -- is if they caught John Stewart's segment on the practice.

Trudeau can do that in certain situations. It happened in 2001 to my friends parents. The government took all their money while they were in the Dominican Republic and they got stuck there. That guy wasnt wrong.
