Is it like escapism and the vtuber is living our their dream of being famous through an anime character avatar while everyone cheers them on? VTubers are rising suddenly in streaming content. This happened recently. I mean gawr gura is new-new and is killing it in the vtuber community.
my guess at popularity is that viewers can be more interactive to anime waifus than actual person behind the camera. It also helps vtubers that popular streamers like pokimane has a vtube avatar for her streams now. This makes it more accepting to the streaming community. anime, videogames, waifu content... like the trinity of viewer content right there. The niche of the niches is appealing because of the interaction viewers experience. Creativity, imagination, appreciation goes hand in hand for vtubers and viewers. THey often comment on their own appearance and use personality to draw viewers in. The waifu experience is real in virtual live streaming. Its also expanding towards other content such as concerts and paywalls. silvervale has $5 asmr content that has gone #1 early. Its described as a schoolgirl gf experience. I'd say it's far less cheesy and acted than pro wrestling, and nobody really plays the heel character either, except as a joke in specific scenarios where a girl plays a ton of pranks on others. I guess they just have more of a professional feel considering the "professional" part of professional streaming. Better production value, more structure to the streaming, more community and organization feel that gives less of an improv feel when they mesh together, compared to say offlinetv is the only thing I can think of that's also a community of streamers.
Also they're run by companies so generally they're heavily screened and handpicked. This allows for far less drama queens, if at all, and little to no conflict amongst streamers in the same group because all the streamers have good natures. To me, they actually kinda remind me of Korean talk shows. Japanese talk shows sorta follow a similar format but Korean talk shows tend to actually focus more on irl friend aspect of the hosts and regulars of their shows. Like one of the most popular personality is a 46 yr old woman who's literally on every show and brings an army of similar people with her to all the shows. People gravitate towards whatever talk shows she's on because you always know what to expect and that the show will have a bit of a structure and art to it. Coco broke it down a while back, YouTube gets like 30%, their company gets 30%, there's some other minor things and they end up taking home around a 30% cut themselves IIRC. But they also get paid directly by Cover and provided with equipment and whatnot. For someone like Coco who has made nearly a million since her debut less than a year ago 30% ain't bad. ...
