IB4 all mythology is fake

Canon: Talos was a giant bronze robot that patrolled Crete to keep pirates out as part of Greek mythology. When Talos was captured by the Sardinians he set himself on fire (or jumped in a volcano) and used his melting body to hug his captors to death.... awesome

So, what could the myth have been? I mean, what does the tale represent. I highly doubt there was an actual Cretian Robot, and if the myth sprang up due to pirate ships but not friendly ships disappearing around Crete then it could be something akin to a shoal trap.

Being made of Bronze is an important cultural part, not necessarily mechanical, since it was a meme at the time to say that Hesiod's men during the bronze age literally WERE made of bronze

...

My hypothesis? Talos was an actual statue somewhere around Crete that was bright bronze and adorned in armour and placed around a shoal trap. The idea being that anyone attempting to loot the highly prized statue would crash and die in the trap and that the locals knew better. Basically, a flytrap... for people.

When the Sardinians learned it was just a trap, they sapped it with fire but were killed in the process

talos is tiber septim, and is the most important hero god of mankind.

he conquered all of tamriel and founded the third empire and the septim dynasty that would rule tamriel for centuries. upon his death he ascended to god-hood.

Talos is the Storm Lord, the Raging One, and the Destroyer.

Leader of the Gods of Fury, he dwells within the Tower of Ruin in the heights of Pandemonium, from whence he bids his followers to go forth and bring destruction and chaos into the world.

I personally think he did manage to ascend into godhood despite what the pesky elves say.

Biggest evidence of this was the ritual performed during the Oblivion crisis, in which the blood of a god was needed to open a portal to Mankar Camoran's realm

He did. And it's explicitly canon that the elves know and accept this.

The Thalmor don't suppress Talos worship because they think it's wrong. They suppress it because they know it's right. The point is that, if they can deny Talos, and deprive him of all worship, it may kill him, or at least drive him out of the pantheon. And their assumption is that, if they can accomplish that, they can bring about the literal end of the world.

The elves believe that they were immortal god-beings before the creation of Nirn, and that Lorkhan forever sundered them from their own divinity. But if the world ends and Mundus is broken, the elves will be free.
