I mean, I've seen quite a lot of episodes, and it's certainly a good series, but how can people put up with THAT formulaicness longterm? It styles itself as an intellectual series, with lots of little quirks, but it's more formulaic than a bad sitcom. Seriously. I won't describe the formula, since most of you probably know it, but still. House was a great character, sure, and the drama is entertaining, and medical jargon can be surprisingly interesting, yet even so.

Thoughts?

It was the characters and interactions that I enjoyed. The medical stuff was interesting but formulaic.

my only experience with house was at some family get together in 2007 or 2008 and there was a marathon on tv and everyone insisted on leaving it on for 3-4 hours. idk what everyone else saw in the show but it was absolute torture for me

I actually enjoyed the formula, and you could almost make a game out of it.

It was usually 2-3 incorrect, life threatening diagnoses. Followed by an epiphany, sparked by a random conversation/thought.

Then he solves the case. Rinse and repeat.

My parents and 2 of my 3 siblings are doctors. When the show first aired my siblings were still studying and they talked a lot of medical stuff with my parents.

Besides the characters, I also liked the show since it helped me understand some medical terms and gave me some idea of what the hell my family was talking about over dinner. Good times.

>Person comes in with some kind of rare disease
>Group comes together to figure it out, thinks it's disease X
>House is insulting to everyone but damn he's charming
>The patient has a sudden turn for the worse, hanging onto life by a thread
>House insults his other friends and probably has sex with his boss
>The group gets together again and finds some obscure disease they missed somehow and treat the patient
>Patient doesn't improve and shows another weird symptom, patient about to die
>House bounces his ball while talking to his buddy who says something that causes him to be curt and leave
>House berates the patient for lying about some innocuous thing and says it's actually super rare disease Y
>Patient survives and House goes home alone and bitter and addicted to pills

Rinse repeat

You don't watch House for the medicine. It's a character drama, through and through. And there's a lot of development and wrenches thrown into that respect.

Everytime I hear Hugh Laurie speak now days it's instantly jarring. His American accent was so natural that I thought it was his actual voice for years.

Never liked the cold opens that make you think it's a different show altogether until the person collapses (and they collapse almost all the time no matter the illness).

Pretty much this. It's a similar pattern to Pimp my Ride.

Person brings in old car
Mechanics check out the car to see how to fix it
Xzibit talks crap about the persons lifestyle
Turns out the car is worse
Xzibit talks crap about his crew overlooking things
Crew members get a wacky idea from problem found earlier
Person gives sob story
Xzibit gives away car

You get a much different and less predictable story from Thomas the Tank Engine not sure how people enjoy House tbh

I recall watching maybe one or two episode, but never got into it. As far as medical shows go, I always preferred Scrubs.

I do find it very silly that Dr. House knew what Arceus was, though.

This.

Also the character drama is much more appealing. The medicine wasn't particularly interesting most of the time.

there are multiple episodes where he was slacking off by playing Metroid. I dont think Pokemon is too far out there <_<
