Board 8 > Hey is multiplayer bad now?

The last time I got into multiplayer was the early days of the 360, I remember playing uno late night and getting to know all sorts of cool people and then playing phantasy star universe, which was a cool game where you would go fight monsters, collect decorations for your room and just chat with people who joined your group.

Recently I tried to get into some console mmos, they all seem to do their best to keep open communication between strangers discouraged. It occurred to me most online games, even when, and almost especially when, online is shoehorned in, communication between people is not allowed.

are there still games out there where you can just do some kinda busywork while you shoot the shit? Are they all shooters? Is it a liability to allow your online players to communicate? Help me out here

You would probably love PSO2. It's got the ability to save and post images baked into the chat system and the endgame consists of people hanging out in space ships chatting, comparing fashion, dancing and shitposting memes until some dark god shows up and they all team up to beat the shit out of it.

I love multiplayer with friends but don't care about chatting with strangers (not because of negative past interactions, I'm just not interested). I regularly get together with board 8ers to play FFXIV but we have a discord call and I don't really talk to pubs who might be in our group.

That's just me though. Other board 8ers have been pretty involved in the FFXIV hunt community and such.
