If the dive was in Galaxy it would have even less uses too with the platforming-heavy gameplay.

I'm always long jumping over diving when I want momentum so yeah, way bigger deal. Sunshine has super speedy diving after spraying water so that alleviates it in that game.

Even Odyssey doesn't have a dive move from the ground though IIRC. It only has the air dive, which is way better, but mechanically is used in completely different contexts.

So I completed 120 stars in 64 and started playing Sunshine, first time I've ever played it. 31 Shines so far so I've played a good chunk to make some observations

  • one of the first things I said was "wow I miss the long jump" and I still miss it
  • FLUDD is fun enough, spraying and sliding around places is cool
  • I suck at the spin jump
  • when you get the fishbowl helmet and have to swim underwater, I honestly hate it and actually think controls worse than Mario 64's swimming controls. Why the hell can you only really control going up and down and pretty much just hoping to fall/fludd up into where you need to go instead of being able to control actually being able to, you know, swim around. Unless I missed something with it.
  • Pachinko star is indeed wonky as hell although I could have had worse luck with it
Overall, yea definitely would never put it above 64. It has a fully controllable camera but that's about all it has on 64, and the camera in 64 still doesn't really bother me all that much outside a few spots. Sunshine's fun though, and very weird at points which is cool.

In Mario 64 the "stage into" jingle is the 1-1 theme from Super Mario Bros.

I feel like I probably recognized that as a kid, but over time completely forgot and started to only associate it with Mario 64 for the rest of my life until now

I had 20 lives and I game overd on that stage. It doesnt help MUCH, but if you ride the lily pad to the end of the stage you can walk along the side all the way back to the beginning and a new lily pad will spawn. Its still tedious and annoying to maneuver, but it beats killing yourself to start over

it's more the whole "having to redo the unclogging with Yoshi" that irks me. Like sure I didn't realize that I got to that island with Yoshi having only 1 life remaining so partly on me but it should absolutely saved that you unclogged it so you just need to swim back to it and jump down the pipe

Galaxy is smart enough to give you checkpoints and an insane amount of lives (on top of, you know, way better level design). I actually forgot Galaxy had checkpoints so that was pretty refreshing when I was playing around eith the gravity mechanics and suffered from incredibly stupid deaths. Though no checkpoints on Daredevil stars makes those even more brutal. A perfect equation imo.

Funny enough I actually think Sunshine controls TOO loose. And things like missing the long jump really hurt it in my eyes

Camera I've said earlier is the one thing Sunshine has objectively better than 64, but I also still never had so much of a problem with 64's. When you know how to use it 64's camera is actually surprisingly manageable.

And actually I think Sunshine has more bullshit death situations! Maybe not "cheap" per se, but when you're doing the red coin switch for Hotel Delfino for instance, if you run out of time the game treats it as a life and bumps you out. First tine doing it I knew I wasn't gonna get the last red coin because I forgot how to get to the room where it was, so I thought "alright lemme just make my way back to the switch and I'll pop it again when the time ends" and then Mario just keeled over. Why not let the player just hit the switch again, why is it treated as a death situation? Same with the Balloon roller coaster ride, if you don't get them within the 3 loops the game just kills you arbitrarily and kicks you out. And to a lesser extent, touching the water oncr in that red coin lily pad one. In 64 whenever I died it was because of my own fault, sometimes some wonky camera work contributed to that but ultimately I fucked up a jump or movement so that was on me. Sunshine has way more bullshit setups for things to fail you I feel.

I don't mind the lack of long jump, since you can just spray water in front of you and go flying across the level. Way more fun.

In 64, whenever I die it often feels like its either the controls or the camera at fault. In Sunshine, yeah those lose conditions should be made clearer, but I still feel like it's my fault and not the games when I lose like often happens in Mario 64. I can never get used to that camera. It's like Lakitu is definitely Bowser's strongest weapon in the game, and he is using him quite effectively to kill Mario permanently.

I don't know about cheap but 64 definitely has some times where a minor mistake cascades into a death.

If you accidentally walk up an incline even slightly you might end up slip sliding to your doom in a level with bottomless pits. Mostly thinking about the "tiny" island in tiny-huge island or other late game areas.

Getting hit by fire can have a similar effect.

I didn't get this collection, and I feel I made the right decision seeing all the Sunshine bull doing the rounds again. Chucksters, manta rays, casino, the Yoshi + lilypad combo shine, Corona, sand bird, watermelon, pachinko, my goodness. I love the setting and a bunch of the ideas but Sunshine is a game that needed more doing than a quick port.
