I cannot believe how bad this game controls. I never played the original but 100% the DS version. Should have put a different game on this collection. Cant get 5 rings in dire docks from the manta ray. You swim right through and it does not count

Nah, the DS version added new characters, but only the new stuff was really made with them in mind. The rest of the game forces the new stuff in and doesn't feel natural, like balloon Mario in the first Bowser level.

The controls feel fine to me, as somebody who also has only played the DS version until now. But the camera is what's hard to deal with.

No way. I will admit when I suck. But these controls are outrageous. Try to get 5 manta ray rings in dire dire docks. Its unreal

Yeah the camera is what has been bugging me. Most of the time it's choosing these god-awful angles and I'm constantly trying to swing it around. I loved the N64 but man it's really hard to go back to that generation. Even the best games are rather obnoxious and honestly kinda janky.

I got a 120 stars in 6th grade. Which was 96-97 for me. Yes, by today's standards it's bad. I haven't played the Switch ver. But it's still an amazing me.

Just like history. We judge it two ways. By when it happened and Now.

The manta ray stuff has nothing to do with controls, the rings are literally terribly made.

The best thing is when you finally get a decent enough angle, only for the camera to start to swing back around when you start moving, especially if it's over a narrow path or something. Just a truly awful camera overall.

I played and beat this as a very young kid. Had no issues with the rings in all the other times I've played it. You suck.

I got the secret flying one. It was terrible. Between the controls and the camera it took many tries. Im playing handheld though. Need to try with my pro controller but Im not home

Yeah, people wore the nostalgia goggles on max settings. The game plays horribly. It was beautiful when it first came out, though.

Man Dire Dire Docks has such beautiful music. This game is probably the pinnacle of music in a Mario game.

Also the eel scared the shit out of me as a kid.

I'll go to my grave saying both the controls and camera (especially) are atrocious in SM64. I've only played the N64 version through Wii U VC, but the Wii U Pro Controller was bad. SM64 DS even on a 3DS or the Wii U with a control stick and not the D-pad sucked.

SM64DS is super underrated. Dunno how it could have been better besides improved controls and a less shitty Wario

I mean, camera controls are better today obviously, but SM64 was one of the first 3D console games and still had a better camera than practically every other platformer of its generation.

Right, but if ported to a system with an actual analogue stick, this isn't a problem anymore.

Personally, I don't remember the character switching being a big deal though? You could switch in the castle, or find a cap inside levels to do it instantly.
