I dont remember the ages of the actors involved and I havent seen cuties but I feel like the subject matter in kids was probably on a similar level.

There was definitely some decent outrage and moral panic, but it was sequestered to opinion columns and maybe some firehose on the local news.

I remember that movie being a big deal, as in a must watch lol. Then I seen it and was like "...ok". I probably was only a couple years older than the kids in the movie tho. Except the real young ones.

You ever see the movie Fresh? They got kids going and doing a dog fight lol. I love that movie. The ending gets me every time.

Samuel L Jackson is in it. Gus from Breaking Bad.

I think the issue with Cuties is less the subject matter and more the way it shoots young girls doing adult dances in an erotic manner. Pixote is one of my favorite films and the subject matter and imagery is much more extreme but while it has child nudity it's never shown in a way that's erotic or could come across as if it's meant to arouse the viewer. If you want an older film with a similar message and controversy to Cuties there is Pretty Baby.

I honestly wanted to watch it again just talking about it. Probably been 2-3 years. It's just an entertaining movie to watch for me. The lil mexican kids funny. It's weird to me that no one ever talks about it. Like I said, it has some star power in it. I guess Gus dude wasn't really known. It's interesting to see him so much younger.

I remember being in high school when copying over video tapes was still a thing, and a friend of mine wanted me to dub him this hip hop show that came on in the middle of the night.

before I copied over the tape, I put it in to see what was on it, and it was the movie Kids.

so, I'm just sitting there going "wtf" throughout this movie; it was probably the most wild thing that I've seen up to that point in my life.

There was a big deal about Kids, yes, but there wasn't any social media & the internet was still in its infancy.

I remember when it first came out, watching it on Cinemax because it couldn't get shown in theaters due to the NC-17 rating. I was kinda disappointed by it-- the movie wasn't great, the guy that nailed all the virgins was ugly & creepy, most of the characters were completely unlikable, etc.

But the soundtrack was pretty great. I think I still have it somewhere. Also, first appearances of Rosario Dawson & Chloe Sevigny.

Legit wondering was it maybe cut out of the American release? Or is it adult nudity being mistaken as child nudity?

I didn't even watch it. I just watched a lot of different view points on it. People I've built up at least some type of trust on. One even debunked a few things on another list, even though he overall disapproved the movie.

Yeah all the nudity is exclusively from the videos the girls watch (when the girls try to imitate what they're seeing to add it to their "risque" choreograph) which plays a big role for the TV MA rating. There is a scene though where the main girl takes a pic of her vagina and posts it on social media, but the vagina is never really shown.

The relevance is that Kids was about underage teens having sex (among other things) and specifically about how it lead to the spread of HIV.

Thats actually not true. I just did some googling because I had remembered an article I read about it that claimed all the actors in kids were kids, turns out about half the cast was minors and the actor that played Telly was 16, Jennie's actress was 19/20ish, Rosario was 15, the actor that played Casper was 19/20ish, and so on and so forth, so there was a significant amount of minors in the film and some of them were involved in very suggestive scenes.
