Welcome to the King of Fighters 2020 (NOT MERCS) Simulated Character Battle Tournament!

The game is simple. The two* listed characters are placed in an (imaginary) location with a variety of (imaginary) environments, kind of like a picture in a child's schoolbook that describes different types of geological features. Within a ten mile radius, there is an (imaginary) urban downtown, exurbs, plains, snow-clad mountains at the edge, dry plains, etc. Fighters start wherever is most appropriate for them, but feel increasingly compelled to seek out their opponent and fight. Strong-willed fighters can try to hold out in their chosen environment for longer... eventually, all will succumb and actively search for the other to battle.

To participate, just vote in bold for whichever character you believe will win. Giving reasoning is optional, but please be polite and read what others have said and carefully make your decision. I'll ping the nominators (they can opt out) to give arguments if they wish.

Here's a HIM respect thread, if anyone feels like trawling through that:

Some things of note:

- HIM has strong mental manipulation, conjuring, teleportation, and shapeshifting.
- He prefers to fight from a distance and psychologically mess with his opponents rather than engage them directly.
- He is able to withstand physical beatdowns from the Powerpuff Girls often (and they're no slouches), though he can still be overwhelmed with sufficient force.
- He has a bunch of abilities that don't seem to be used too often, like stretchy limbs, eye beams, mouth lasers, etc.

He-Man is a powerful force for good, so HIM would take special care to mess with his head, maybe by creating visions of He-Man's loved ones turning on him, or trying to convince him to leave behind his good ways. HIM gets creative.

first off, HIM's able to withstand a beating from The Powerpuff Girls, who could probably take on He-Man easy, but going into what he does

  • Limitless transformation abilities. Possesses inanimate objects, shapeshifts, and can turn into giant horror monsters
  • Teleports, has some telekinesis, laser eyes, lightning, energy blasts, and really just kinda does whatever he feels like. At one point he just casually moves the sun when it's in his eyes? He's kinda inconsistent with no real upper limit.
  • Creates a giant plague that turns everyone in the town enraged with hate. Also mind controls people, but doesn't seem to be able to do it to the PPG.
  • Master of manipulation
  • At one point when the PPG aren't around to stop him, he defeats all other villain single-handedly and takes over the world, turning into a massive hellscape

If there's one long-suffering man on Planet Eternia... well, it's Skeletor. But moreover, he's He-Man.

I don't feel as if it's really that hard to sell He-Man's ability to win a 1v1 fair fight; he's He-Man. Man pushes small planets and generates tornadoes, and can throw things faster than the PPG can fly without accidentally time travelling. But if you're bored, here's a blog from 2010 made with zero care and a snarky disposition about He-Man's strength feats, because respect threads look ugly to me, so I find this wordpress-ass blog with broken links to be more appealing: https://www.toplessrobot.com/2010/03/the_10_most_impossible_feats_of_he-man.php

But moreover... He-Man's PRETTY constantly mentally tortured. That's kind of his thing; most foes can't beat him straight up, so they'll try something else. The most obvious would be He-Man's encounters with King Hsss, master of the Snakemen. Hsss is the reincarnation of Serpos, an ever-reincarnating Snake Deity who tore his way through the fabric of the prison dimension to punk Skeletor and become a big bad villain. Hsss does a WONDERFUL job of, when not poisoning He-Man's friends or threatening him personally to strike at his vulnerabilities, brainwashing He-Man's friends and turning them into his loyal snakemen slaves. This weighs incredibly heavy on He-Man, especially as once Hsss has turned someone once, his mere presence can turn them a second time, with no effort or magic involved. Any time Hsss returns, Prince Adam is at risk of having to fight and kill all of his friends in order to protect an Eternia that Hsss continues to ravage. And this isn't a schemer who's significantly weaker than He-Man, either; Hsss has explicitly fought King Greyskull in the past, who He-Man draws his incredible strength from, and actively calls He-Man weaker, going toe to toe with the superhuman.

HIM's general tricks are just lesser, more isolated versions of what He-Man's already gone through. And then you're left with a tanky heat ray man versus the guy who pushes planets and tosses castles.

The powerpuff girls, individually, are strong enough to toss large objects far into space in the span of a few seconds. HIM laughed off a barrage from all three of them and then just made himself stronger. I don't think he's that outclassed here.

But more importantly HIM just has so many tricks up his sleeve that I don't think this is even going to come to a fight. As far as I know the power sword isn't immune to being possessed or animated, so once HIM sees the huge show He-Man makes out of transforming with it he'll probably just turn it against him. Or turn it into a bouquet of flowers, or just teleport/telekinesis it out of his hand. Put that on top of all the mental manipulation he loves to do and I don't see how He-Man even makes a fight out of this.

Apparently He-Man fought somewhat evenly against Pre-Crisis Superman.

As much as I'd love to keep He-Man in mid tier (I do believe he's entirely mortal - just not morally), if you really want to extrapolate the potential lengths of Him to near-toon levels, yeah he's had multiple cross-overs where he's fought Superman.

Frankly, it's Him's MO to play with his food. Him is the epitome of a saturday morning cartoon villain. Fighting THE Saturday Morning Cartoon hero.

And there's enough lore around the Power Sword that it'd likely find its true shape even with manipulation - communication with the Sorceress through it as a conduit, the spirit of King Greyskull within it, the way it triggers based off of a righteous spirit.

If Him plays absolutely optimally, he'll win, sure. Take away the sword, don't do anything that would trigger Adam to reclaim it, basically perfectly read his opponent and counter them optimally, sure. But if he screws around in the wrong way, I have no doubt he's dead. And considering Him's track record against kindergarteners in terms of emotional manipulation and penchant for theatrics, I have a lot of confidence in He-Man winning far, far more potential encounters than he loses, most of them Him-orchestrated.

This seems to come down to personality. As has been said, HIM has a good shot if he goes for the kill. But that's not what he does - he loves to mess with opponents' heads, particularly heroes'. This seems like the kind of fight He-Man was built for.

He-Man.
