Donald Trumps rhetoric about good genes is indistinguishable from the Nazi rhetoric during the Second World War, an expert on the Holocaust has said.

The US president praised the genes of Minnesotans during a campaign rally in the city of Bemidji last week, during which he also derided refugees, gloated about a reporter being shot with a rubber bullet, and praised a general who fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War.

This state was pioneered by men and women who braved the wilderness and the winters to build a better life for themselves and for their families. They were tough, and they were strong. You have good genes, you know that, right? Mr Trump said to applause from supporters.

You have good genes. A lot of its about the genes isnt it, dont you believe? The racehorse theory you think was so different? You have good genes in Minnesota.

Mr Trumps comments were widely condemned as echoing the language of eugenicists, who believe the human race can be improved genetically by selective breeding.

As a historian who has written about the Holocaust, I'll say bluntly: This is indistinguishable from the Nazi rhetoric that led to Jews, disabled people, LGBTQ, Romani and others being exterminated, Steve Silberman, an acclaimed science writer who has covered the Nazi treatment of people with autism, said on Twitter.

This is America 2020. This is where the GOP has taken us.

Eric Feigl-Ding, an epidemiologist and senior fellow at the Federation of American Scientists, said Mr Trumps comments mirrored master race eugenics.

He added: This was how the Holocaust started. Dont ignore.

The US president has a long history of praising the role of genes in human capabilities, and has commended himself for his great and winning genes.

In 2016, Mr Trumps biographer revealed Mr Trump believes in the racehorse theory of genetics, and that his father, Fred Trump, had taught his son the familys success was due to their genes.

The family subscribes to a racehorse theory of human development, Michael DAntonio told PBS.

They believe that there are superior people and that if you put together the genes of a superior woman and a superior man, you get a superior offspring.

In undated video footage unearthed by the Huffington Post, Mr Trump, before becoming president, denied that all men are created equal.

Well its not true, because some are smart, some arent, he said.

In separate footage, Mr Trump said: Im proud to have that German blood. Theres no question about it.

A fresh reminder that when people bitch about "Nazi comparisons", what they're really tired of is how people talk about all the actual parallels that scum like Trump have to fascists, because scum like Trump are fascists.

This is an overreaction. He's just talking about good genes, which many people talk about and think about all the time, consciously or subconsciously, when seeking mates and other situations.

Talking about good genes is fine. It's when you force the issue upon society that it becomes a problem, such as Hitler and the holocaust and all that.

A person can believe in matching good genes without also supporting things such as genocide and other forceful means. You can believe that it should happen voluntarily.

No one is saying Trump was thinking "we're gonna use you guys to create super americans and kill off everyone else"...But the President simply putting that rhetoric out there and bolstering his base, whom are already psychotic to begin with, is just playing with fire. Its just crazy irresponsible, and its not a stretch at all. He has thousands of Nazi supporters who hear that get a smile across their faces. In that sense he knew what he was doing and who he was speaking to.

On the one hand, I dont disagree with the idea. Some "genes", more likely traits, are more desirable than others.

On the other hand, I dont think the President should be loudly espousing the idea at a rally.

I don't think this is accurate at all. I think the anti Trump crowd simply sees his supporters this way, but in reality the vast majority don't even think about white supremacy or that Trump is somehow dropping subtle cues that they should be selectively breeding.

The comments from the president should be taken as a compliment to the people in Minnesota...nothing more.

Well considering the mass sterilizations of latino women going on in concentration camps I don't really think it's much of a stretch.

We will see what comes of that. I don't think their reasons for wanting to sterilize women are so much rooted in genetic superiority as they are to try and prevent illegal immigrants from having babies in the US. Which of course is wrong no matter what the reason is.

A) Given his past history (Sh**hole countries, etc), why do you feel his statement should be taken as a compliment and nothing more?
B) Why did he comment about genes in mostly white state?
C) Why did specifically refer to racehorses, which IS used for genetics superiority language?

A) people are capable of saying both respectful and disrespectful things at different times.

B) I don't know. Is that where he's mostly having his rallies? Is that the demographics of a lot of the swing states? Don't most states have mostly white people?

C) Because like you said it's used for genetic superiority language. Discussions of genetic superiority are not automatically Nazi rhetoric. The Nazis did talk about it, but so have millions if not billions of other people in the present and throughout history in a respectful, peaceful way that does not involve the promotion or advocation of genocide.

People definitely are, I'm asking HOW you reached that conclusion in this instance, given both Trump's past history of racist statements and your frequent "there isn't enough data to know for certain". You are putting forward a thesis (Trump's comments were just compliments) - I'm asking what evidence you have to support it.

B) I don't know. Is that where he's mostly having his rallies? Is that the demographics of a lot of the swing states? Don't most states have mostly white people?

Minnesota has a MUCH higher percentage of white people (80%) than many other swing states. So again, why JUST in this state?

So you believe Trump was referring to genetic superiority language.. and that's OK? Saying that Minnesotans have good genes.. while other states don't?

I'm not apologizing for Trump or his fold, but have you ever heard of The Boy Who Cried Wolf?

I remember when people tried to make George W. Bush out to be Adolf Hitler. To a lesser extent, anyone who has run on a Republican party ticket has been "Hitler." (To be fair, people on the right frequently try to make a Josef Stalin out of anyone who dares to run as a Democrat.)

Now we have an individual who actually repeats the rhetoric of Nazis, who is overseeing the genocide of undocumented immigrants in concentration camps, and people are complaining about the left trying to turn everyone into Hitler.

There are greater things at stake here than people getting upset over the same old rhetoric, but that it is the same old rhetoric is how it's so readily dismissed.
