For 18 months, residents of a village in Wales have been mystified as to why their broadband internet crashed every morning.
Now engineers have finally identified the reason: A second-hand television that emitted a signal that interfered with the connection.

...

After carrying out a plethora of tests, engineers had a theory that the problem could be caused by a phenomenon called single high-level impulse noise (SHINE), in which an appliance emits electrical interference that impacts broadband connectivity.
Engineers used a device called a spectrum analyzer and walked up and down the village "in the torrential rain" at 6 a.m. to see if they could locate an electrical noise, Jones said in a statement.
At 7 a.m. -- "like clockwork" -- the device "picked up a large burst of electrical interference in the village."
"The source of the 'electrical noise' was traced to a property in the village. It turned out that at 7 a.m. every morning the occupant would switch on their old TV which would in-turn knock out broadband for the entire village."

Wow

That's pretty fascinating and amusing.

Wonder if they replaced their TV after finding out.

Seems like the guy just agreed to not use that TV any more. I'm wondering if he has another TV, though.

And if this happened in the US the ISP would just tell customers to reboot their modem or something

That's an awesome super power he had, however short lived.

I just want to restore this world back to the natural. Bring order to this broken reality. To the way it should have been, all those many years ago.

Having worked for a US ISP, there are network engineers who isolate homes that cause a lot of interference, and disconnect their line, put a tag on it, and set up a work order for a home technician (my job) to isolate the issue and do whatever repairs are possible.

For a noisy TV like that guy had, we had filters that could be installed on the TV cable line that would block upstream signals but still allow the downstream signal in. (For basic cable coming in to a TV, this doesnt interfere with the function as it doesnt transmit anything back to the cable system)

Meanwhile I've had to explain what packet loss is to tech support workers, explain to them that the signal to noise ratio the modem is displaying is very poor, and go out to the cable podium near the street and lift the cover to troubleshoot myself and tell them an animal built a nest in there and chewed on wires

it sucks when you know more than the person coming to fix your shit. Ive dealt with some really shitty techs who probably should be reeducated.

Right? I do IT work and software engineering for my small manufacturing company. Dealing with other software companies in our niche has convinced me that I'm the best person at computers in the area. The bar is pretty low.
