Board 8 > I'm playing through FFTA, is this game any good?

So far it seems simpler than FFT in design, which is a good thing. I really dig the different races/different class thing, wish more games would do this.

Are there any bonkers broken jobs I should be working toward?

It's decent.

Assassin for the Viera is pretty broken, it's super fast in a game where speed is hugely valuable and combined with the Concentration ability to boost accuracy, its status moves (including the instant death one) are unreasonably accurate. Viera in general have some pretty crazy stuff.

it's fun in a mindless grindy way, but the plot/characters are bad

so it depends on what you're looking for

personally I wasn't a fan of how the race/class thing was implemented because it made every race's job tree too shallow

Once I got a party strong enough to handle most encounters I had fun of with it but getting to that point was not much fun at all

The game has flaws but it's a fun game to lose yourself to.

Just pretend the main story doesn't exist (and by doesn't exist I mean mash through the dialogue) and you're golden.

I love it. Easily my favorite plot/characters in a FF game, everyone else is wrong. The gameplay is simple enough but fun. Not a whole lot of challenge, pretty easy to break the game, but it's very pleasant. The world and all the different races are delightful and really suck me in so I don't notice that the gameplay is a bit on the repetitive side.

Only part that really sucks is the law system, it's a good idea but it doesn't work

All I remember is a blue mage(?) spell that inflicted sleep on everybody + equipping my team with sleep prevention equipment, and letting my Assassin run around instakilling with 100% accuracy

Played it back in 2004 and found it extremely average. Only good thing about it was it taught me how to play FFT.

IIRC every map had 6 random rules
3 are things you should do, and 3 you mustn't do
Some rules were fucking stupid and could cripple you the entire map
I think no knockback, no magic, no swords and stuff like that. That sucked balls

There were maps that had permadeath but no rules - I tried to always play my missions there

The races/jobs locking is cool because it forces you to use different jobs instead of finding one good job and then sticking to that.

The Judge thing also means that a diverse team can thrive and roll with punches a lot easier. They also could accomplish this with like, good enemy design and placement, but there are like 3 playable SRPGs out there and FFT just barely make the cut so I'll give it a break.

Also I'm playing this at 3x speed and I would consider the pace to be "bearably slow" so I can understand some people not liking it
