Should I get it?

I enjoyed both Bayonetta games so I would probably like the gameplay. However, the overall feel of the game doesn't look like something I would like. (Dystopian robotic future)

It's less dystopian robot future and more far post apocalypse. You're basically exploring a world that has been completely abandoned by humans for a long time. It's a lot of deserts and forests and City ruins.

Plus if you like Bayonetta the combat in nier is almost as satisfying with a lot more build variety.

An important note, though. The first playthrough is relatively short because you're meant to play through the game at least three times. The second playthrough is a replay of the first from a different character's perspective, and the third playthrough is literally the second half of the game.

Also, it has one of the best video game soundtracks of all time.

PC port still has some frame rate issues, I would highly suggest getting it on the PS4 if you're interested. Japanese devs have a really bad habit in half assing PC ports.

What makes it so good?

I'll break it down into style, substance, and story.

Stylistically the game is just incredibly well put together. Character designs are great, it has one of the best soundtracks in gaming, the voice acting is all top quality, and the game makes good use of hue and saturation and color. Stages are relatively small, but they are highly varied and really give you a sense that you're navigating through a world that was lived in. The normal enemies are pretty generic looking, but the bosses are all carefully crafted to tell a story, one which you learn in more detail with each playthrough.

In terms of substance, this is a platinum game so you know what you're getting. It's definitely easier than Bayonetta, but you have a wider range of weapons to play with and the chip system which lets you slot in upgrades gives you a huge amount of build variety. You can go for crit builds, ranged builds, lifesteal builds, high-risk high-reward low health builds, etc. There are heavy weapons, light weapons, fist weapons, Spears, etc so if you have a particular type of play style you can customize it that way too. You can also have up to three pods that float behind you and you can equip them with different abilities as well to further customize your gameplay. The game also uses an active Dodge, where you dodged when you press the button no matter what sort of attack you're doing, so you're never trapped in the middle of a big slow attack if you don't want to be. there are even some chips you can equip that give you bonuses for perfect dodging or parrying enemy attacks.

In terms of story, the game goes hard on existentialism and purpose and is not afraid to posit difficult questions with uncomfortable answers. The first playthrough ends on what feels like a pretty cliche note, but as you keep playing through more and more you realize that things you thought were true are lies, and things that you believed in can backfire. If you make it all the way through to the last ending, the game concludes with an extremely unique segment that asks you one of the hardest questions a game could possibly ask. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the final ending has brought many people to tears.

I just beat the intro area. The performance doesn't seem too bad so I'll hold off for now.

The game is pretty fun. I don't really understand how healing works. Seems like I just automatically consume stuff in my inventory when I'm low.

ALso, I have no idea what I'm doing with the bullets. It seems way better than melee attacks right now.

ALso, I have no idea what I'm doing with the bullets. It seems way better than melee attacks right now.

You have regular healing items (small, medium, large) that you can buy or pick up and use manually.

The game starts you off with an "auto use item" chip that will use one of them for you when your health gets below a certain percent. Basically, you can equip a variety of chips to upgrade or alter your abilities, but more powerful chips take up more space. Most of the customization is picking the combo of chips you want. If you want, you can unequip that "auto use item" chip to add something else like more crit, faster run speed, better item drop, etc. You do all that from the "Skills" tab in your main menu you can create 3 chip sets to swap between. If you want, you can even unequip things like HP and map displays to make room for more upgrades.

More details here:
https://nierautomata.wiki.fextralife.com/Plug-in+Chips

Bullets are just a bonus thing you do to add more damage. There are chips you can equip to boost bullet damage and you can find 2 other pods in the world with different attack types (missiles and lasers). There's an "auto fire" chip you can equip if you're on easy mode as well so you don't have to hold the button down. Melee is ultimately where your real damage comes from, but keeping your bullet spam up over a whole fight definitely adds a non-trivial amount of damage.

EDIT: Also, for normal mode, you can use the auto-equip feature and have the game build a chip set for you based on whatever you have in your inventory. Auto-equip is perfectly fine for normal difficulty if you're finding the system too complex to start. On your first play through, most of the chips you'll use are found on dead bodies. Nier has a Dark Souls like online system where the bodies of other players will appear in your world sometimes when they die. Praying over the body lets you disassemble it for parts and usually rewards you some money, items, and at least 1 or 2 chips. Early in the game, this is often where your best chips will come from.

You can run back to your body and pick up your stuff. if you're just using Auto equip it's not a big deal because you find chips often enough, but if you've actually started fusing them into a more optimal build you're going to want to go back and get your body because your equipped chips stay with your corpse when you die.
