The internet is a cool place. The song "Range of the Buffalo" or "Buffalo Skinners" as published by Alan Lomax has the lines

So what is croton coffee? Alan Lomax is dead and gone, long time. How are we ever going to know. Most singers changed the wording.

I found the answer on someone's forum. Croton Oil turns you into a poop machine so croton coffee gives you the runs.
