Would you support an 18 year term limit for SCOTUS justices?

Yeah, anyone being there too long is kind of dumb, or at minimum set a retirement age.

I don't think long terms serve actually serve the purpose they're supposed to.

Feel like these things just give corruption a hole it can dig its way into and stay for a lifetime.

Which is a silly protest effort and, more importantly, it doesn't set terms on congressmen and senators which is what we REALLY need >_> There are some congressmen who have held their post for 30 or 40 years, with a few having served close to 60 years.

It would also change the appointment process, making it so every president has the opportunity to appoint only two justices during their four years in office.

By law, Congress can set the number of justices, but terms limits on the justices may require a change to the Constitution, which has been interpreted to give justices life terms. A constitutional amendment would be more difficult to pass than a bill since it requires ratification by three-fourths of the 50 states.

Doesn't seem like it is going to happen if they need 37 states to agree to this.

At least they have been voted in every 2-6 years.

Truth be told, my "fix" is to do something similar, make the terms 18 years just like they suggest, but have them staggered every two years. That way, you know every midterm election results in a Supreme Court nominee as a result as well.

If a vacancy occurs, it is for the remainder of the term in question.

I'd prefer mandatory retirement, but I do think we need a way to get old farts out of positions of power. Mental acuity fades with age and we don't need people nearing 90 to be making important decisions.

Which isn't much of a check when, again, you have some people in there for close to 60 years. The longest-serving SCOTUS member was only 36 years, whereas 113 congressmen and 22 senators have held their office at least 36 years.

Even if it somehow passed it would be struck down as unconstitutional almost immediately. Term limits on justices would require a Constitutional amendment.

LMAO for real, it's hilarious how many times they blatantly cheat whenever they don't get their way, only to have it blow up in their faces later on.

The last amendment was congress saying congress can set their own salary. And that was nearly 30 years ago.

You aren't getting a new amendment that would benefit anyone but the corrupt anytime soon.

They already could set their own salary, but the amendment made it so that changes to their salary would not take effect until their next term.
