Whenever I'm working with clients and coworkers describe a client to me as a "man's man", it's always:

At best a standoffish jerk who doesn't socialize.

Most typically someone who wants everyone to know they're in charge and not have anyone question their authority.

At worst a bigot.

Could just be me, though.

The masculine American male is a dying breed. We have been told for far too long that violence is never the answer. Weve been told its cruel to kill our own food. Weve been conditioned to believe theres no place in modern society for the man who refuses to shave his chest or wear skinny jeans. As a man you are a protector. As a man you are a provider. As a man you are solely responsible for the safety and well being of your family. How can you be a good husband if you cant defend your wife? How can you be a good father if you cant protect your children? Remember the eyes of the children are fixed upon you. You serve as an example of what young men should grow up to be and of what young women should seek out in a partner. So grow your beard, wear your boots, eat your steak, carry a knife, own a gun, protect your woman, and fight for what is right and just. Be strong. Be of good courage. Long live the masculine American male.

This is the best definition of it Ive seen

From Urban Dictionary:
Man's Man
A man's man is generally a male that puts the bigger things in life before him. He is humble, and always makes people feel important. He is very intelligent and works very hard. A man's man is someone that has aspirations in life, and wants to be the best that he can be. He will never say or do anything out of the way that would hurt his career, family, or the person that he loves. He is very polite, and always works for what he has. He takes control of situations and does this to the very best of his ability.

That is by far the most idealized definition of the term I've ever seen.

And every one of those qualities is absent in anyone I've ever heard described as a man's man.

If he's self-described, it's one thing, but if other people are calling him that, then he's a good guy. Bet they are just putting you in your place because you were acting smug to them.

It literally just means you are a man of good virtue...why would that be offensive. Literally fucking losers can't go a day without getting outraged at nothing.

Uh lol at the usual suspects taking this as a personal insult.

EDIT: I probably should clarify since someone alluded to it. It's never meant as a compliment. It's meant as a caution, and "a nice way" to say what I've described in the OP.

Didn't you cosplay and meet up with Aeris and Megatech? Of course you don't feel like a mans man since then.

Lol there he goes again. Always trying to put himself on a pedestal. A man's man is a good label to have. Dudes saw right through and treated you like dirt as they should.

You don't meet a true "man's man" unless you run in certain circles.

A "man's man" is someone who exudes a masculine energy that other men can admire or look up to. Generally he would be considered a prototypical "Alpha Male" but without the stereotype of being "dominating".

He'd be someone who has a strong physical presence and confidence, and also likes to partake in "masculine" interests or activities. He'd be adept at and do things like brew his own beer, woodwork or metalwork, shoot guns, go hunting, camping/backpacking, play sports, work on cars, martials arts/boxing, cooking, do his own yardwork/housework, etc.
