I hate the motion control gimmicks (and thats with the pro controller) and I especially hate the camera angles. You cant move them almost ever. Add the annoying gravitational stuff with shitty camera and it just is frustrating to play. Worlds seem so linear and boring. Im 68 stars in and it just feels like a chore to get each star. Ill still try to get all of them for completions sake, but doubt Ill ever pick this up and play again.

I loved it, when it came out. Haven't played it again tho. Never had access to it again. I honestly think it's potentially my favorite 3D one I played. But Im missing a lot of the ones after that.

Galaxy is an excellent game. But it was definitely held back by being a bit too easy. That was a shame. The last thirty of so stars are pretty hard, though.

I dont get how so many people think this is excellent. Its easy, linear and gimmicky. I never got it for the Wii because thats the impression I got back then as well. I see I did well in skipping it. Maybe its because Im prone to migraines and motion sickness, so all these angles and unmovable camera just annoy me.

The first time I played it on the Wii, I felt the exact same way. It just didnt click with me.

When Galaxy 2 came out, I reluctantly purchased it... and fell in love with it. It got rid of the unfun levels and was pure joy.

whats weird is that Im replaying Galaxy 1 on the Switch, and Im starting to like it. I can still see the shortcomings but its pretty fun to play.

Like half of the levels dont follow that gameplay and simply present a large world you would find in, say, 64

I think you should view Galaxy as a 3D take on 2D Mario, rather than as a successor to 64 and Sunshine, which obviously emphasize exploration. The linearity is the point; it allows the game to funnel you through a variety of clever platforming level designs.

The camera is a product of the Wii not having a clever analog stick. I too have found it frustrating after just playing Sunshine, but mostly it's where you want it to be.

It's also worth noting they kind of expected you to hit c a lot on the nunchuck, which was moved to L on Switch. It's probably more intuitive to hit c on Wii since a lot of faves relied on it. In some areas you will not be able to move the camera with the stick, but you can still move it behind you with L.

In general many of the limitations this have has made a lot of intuitive sense when controlling with the Wii remote and nunchuck, and are more annoying with a proper controller.

I consider Galaxy to be a kind of transition point between the Mario 64/Sunshine style platformer to a more traditional linear Mario platformer, since most of the levels are point A to B with little exploration.

I know some purists complained how similar 3D Land was to Galaxy. Replace those little boxes with launch stars and most levels fit the mold.

Galaxy is more of an in between. Some levels are about light exploration (like honey hive) and others are strictly linear set pieces (battlerock iirc).

Btw there's a type of comet that only unlocks after the final bowser fight. If you're saving that for last, you'll end up with a slog of the same comet type over several levels at the end. So do that asap imo.

I think it has a lot to do with how hard it broke expectations of what Mario was. At the time it felt like the whole game from its very concept to its orchestral music was filled to the brim with imagination, with little care to sticking to conventions. I remember before it was announced thinking "what would they even do? 64 2? What's the point?"

I was probably around 12 or 13 whenI played it, and it almost felt like playing 64 when I was 4. In a strange way I now have nostalgia about the nostalgia this game made me feel lol. And Odyssey managed to recapture some of that magic again.

Going back to it, and looking at it from the more mechanical eye I have now, and it's fairly underwhelming, much like how 64 is these days. I've been playing some NSMBU recently and getting 100% in that game is definitely more difficult and engaging, but it doesn't have the sane celebration because of the limited creativity outside of interesting platforming challenges. Galaxy is the opposite imo: superb creativity (for its time) in most things, but pretty uninteresting in terms of actual platforming challenges.

Take Super Mario 64. I played that like six or seven times all the way through.

But Sunshine, Galaxy, Galaxy 2, 3D World, even Odyssey, only once.

Granted, as life wore on I've got less time for games and more games to play, but still.

If you ever want to give the game another chance down the line it's a good excuse. It goes faster because Luigi runs faster and jumps higher, so you can do a lot of skips pretty easily.

But if you're not feeling it nah lmao

I remember thinking it was just okay at the time. Everyone says the polish and level design is some of the best in the series, but regardless of that, it's not in the free-roaming style they were going for in 64 and Sunshine, so I just felt kind of meh about it.

I've All Stars, so I'll get around to it eventually.

You'd think so, but it controls rather well. The perspective may screw with you a bit but you get used to it easily.

Considering I've played Sonic Adventure 2, spherical planets with gravity could control a hell of a lot worse.

That's cool if that's what you like. Im just saying Mario games have never really gone for a challenging experience. Nobody was playing 64 back in the day for the challenge (because there's only like a handful of tough stars) They just wanted to explore the levels and do fun platforming
