ok, this doesnt even really have any dancing... ? its zendaya doing whatever circus stunts. lots of cuts and shots where camera is far away since theyre clearly using cgi or a stunt double. this is not a good musical number at all.

and if you think la la land is great you have a lot to look forward to by watching old musicals. it doesnt really compare to busby berkeley or freed unit stuff in terms of laughs or dance numbers.

The problem with modern musical movies is that they all feel way too streamlined and sanitized. Everyones voices are auto tuned so it doesnt even feel like theyre actually singing. It would be better if they used live audio of the actors singing on set instead of having them record all the songs in a studio

couldnt care less about it being live or not

filmmakers need to learn how to do good choreography and not do a ton of cuts and just let us watch the beautiful movie stars do their thing

iirc, Zendaya did most of her stunts, and I didn't know that you were also referring to dancing with your topic.

and I disagree. like, I've seen older musicals, have enjoyed a few of them, but I don't think that cherry picking, using an example of a classic and using an example of a poor quality musical helps illustrate anything.

plus, I think that given time, La La Land will be remembered as a classic, too.

la la land will only become a classic because it is a full blown masterpiece compared to other modern musicals (which are extremely bad). and also because the vast majority of people refuse to watch old stuff and will miss out on the goods.

if film culture is "going downhill", I don't think it's for the reason I'm inferring from your post; but more because there's an "oversaturation" of access to movies that might make people more apathetic towards the medium, regardless of whether movies might good or not.

yeah people think the mega blockbusters and whatever netflix is dumping onto its platform are the best that movies have to offer cuz they have the largest marketing budgets and/or its convenient. lots of conflation between convenience and quality. pretty dumb imo.

but also people do have extremely bad taste in movies since their brains are being rewired by the above. its like the thing with the dogs drooling at the ring of a bell. whats that called again. googled it. pavlov. people see ugly cgi and green screen and rapid cutting and lots of exposition dumps where every plot detail is explained. then they go watch an old movie or indie movie or foreign movie and none of this happens and theyre like "wow this is boring i dont get it." when in reality their brain has been trained to hate that which is different (original). sad!

Access to films is a good thing. What's not good is that the mainstream streaming services that most people rely on to determine their tastes have barely any films made before the 1990s and keep pumping out over promoted "originals" that are largely shallow and poorly made.

There are certainly great films being made today, but they don't tend to get much attention outside of festivals. There's definitely very little being made that can match some of these classic musicals for choreography, shot composition, vivid colours and creativity.

I'm not criticizing it, but I'll use myself as an example:

before streaming services were a thing, every Friday I'd go to Borders or Blockbuster to buy some used movies (they wouldn't give me a card), and even if the movie ended up not being good, I'd still consider buying and watching it an event since my access (time, money, choices, etc.) was more limited.

now I have access to THOUSANDS of movies at any given time (even when I'm on my phone in the bathroom), but I might watch two or three movies a month.

and it's not even the qualities of the movies, it's just that there's so much to choose from.

there's also the fact of the quality of television shows improving, and can feel like they're 10+ hour movies.

Nah. It's because of scenes like this
https://youtu.be/waTDxRZ93Qc

Try all you might to undermine its accomplishments, but for this to be as choreographed as well as it is paired with the natural lighting and preparations that went into getting it shot like that is no small feat. Especially when it's all a single shot? Yuhh, this one's gonna be treated well by time.

I liked La La Land but that was the worst musical sequence in the movie imo

I'm not the biggest fan of musicals, but La La Land doesn't impress me at all on any level beyond the opening number, whereas the classical musicals just plain succeed at being movies, and are very entertaining and moving.

One of my favorites is a little British musical called Moon Over the Alley, which features music by Galt Macdermot of Hair. There was never a stage version of this film, as far as I'm aware, so a number of choice songs by this guy are only in the film as far as I'm aware, and its a gorgeous and heart-rending film that pretty much literally disappeared until the British Film Institute dug it out and put it on disc. Here's one of the few clips from the film on YouTube...

Another Day of Sun was a great track, but also the highlight of that movie. Pretty boring after that opening sequence. And Emma Stone's Oscar win was the least-deserved in quite a while.

I love how Busby Berkley numbers are basically just high budget experimental films inserted into Hollywood movies.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJHfApfdWW0

This is one of the best and, ultimately, most horrifying musical numbers ever, and I refuse to believe they weren't intentionally trying to scare the fuck out of America with it.

context - a cop kills a black man ass he's running away early in the movie, but the police spin it as him "reaching for a weapon", and the guy with the gun witnesses it

at the end of the movie, he and his friend are contracted to move stuff out the cop's house, and the guy with the gun (the movie's protagonist) recognizes him
