Fucking sucks but I'm an idiot for thinking anything else was going to happen. The worst part is I'm a pretty decent data analyst with absolutely 0 college background in the field and just worked my way into the position with a company I've been with for 6 years, so finding another job in this field will be hard as fuck when min req is a bachelor's from what I've seen and most of the jobs just require idiots to be able to make a pivot table lol

Saved a shit ton of money and moved back to my parents house right when I got furloughed. Gonna go back to school and finish off my long over due degree I guess. I feel completely helpless with how uncertain my future is at this point.

Sounds like you're in a position where you'd really benefit from getting a job by word of mouth from a (ex) coworker who could point you directly you to somebody hiring. Although if it's a job where a Bachelor's degree is basically a hard and fast requirement, then I'm not sure that company did you the best by even letting you work in that position unless they started making you take the college classes for it concurrently or something.

Yeah I'm trying to network with a few ex coworkers. But the industry I'm in (travel&hospitality) is so fucked right now that its leading nowhere.

But yeah they totally fucked me. And I fucked myself for taking the job to begin with. If I would have stayed where I was at I would be getting paid a lot less but I'd still have a job and have retained my benefits I've earned over the years. Can't say I'm alone though. Of a team of 8 only one of them has a degree (the director of the dept). And 2 of us have so far been laid off with more to be expected. They definitely did not require us to go to school lol

It's going to be hard to find a job in that field partially because it's been flooded with a gigantic amount of (kind of) over qualified PhDs. Or at least, that seems to be the market from what I've heard.

If you had income under $18,000 for the year you are in luck.

You can apply for the Federal Pell Grant.

You could receive almost $6,000 for a year to attend college.

Loans would let you borrow an additional $13,000 per year to pay housing and food/medical.

Look for a topic on CE in about an hour. From me.

I feel like anyone with 2 years of job experience in this field is already over qualified tbh. I was job searching this morning and every local ad looked like this:
"Requirements: Bachelor's degree and 4 years job experience

Job duties: able to create pivot tables (?)"

I didnt add the question mark. A dozen of the ads I saw had a question mark after pivot tables lmao a few requested Oracle certs and I'm not certified but I'm definitely qualified. Sucks.

easier said than done but you could move to a major city and take a contract gig or find a remote one.

Have you considered just calling them directly and explaining the situation? The reqs are just recommendations, and while an electronic system might filter you out, if you've got the job experience that should at least net you an interview.

Shit, tag me homie. I've been out of school for 6 or 7 years full time with a few classes here and there since so I'm definitely lost.

I live in Vegas and have a lot of immediate family here. I'm lucky to have them as my safety net right now. I am going to start sending my resume out everywhere though but I am kinda set on going back to school.

I'll give it a shot, thanks. I'm definitely not gonna give up on searching for jobs.

"Data analyst" is a very very very broad term and i doubt anyone with a phd is competing with tc for the same role

I have a job in the hospitality sector and most places had a have a degree in x or y amount of years in the field when I was applying a couple years ago so you might still be able to get at least to the interview stages. Id still just put apps in and explain your experience level in the cover letter.

My position is the same way as yours in that it says to have a degree (or x amount of years experience) and Im the only one with the specific degree that matches what they wanted. Everyone else is mainly experience based. Maybe see if you can get a good reference from your old boss too

The great thing about college or University?
At the moment you walk through those hallowed halls, you can apply for various apprenticeships or vol positions.
That gets you noticed and job experience.

That happened to me >_> they eliminated my department at my old job and rather than shuffling us around they just paid us all to fuck off.

Because I didn't have a degree or any certifications in what I was actually doing I basically got no response from anyone in that same area. I ended up getting a job doing something I did as a "side" job at my old job.

And then they're like "Oh you know how to do [thing from old job]?" Like yeah no shit you saw it on my resume...

again in the easier said than done category: it sounds like you're due for some growth in your professional career and/or personal life. certifications and/or a degree are a must these days to advance in a company. if you get desperate, you can do what I did and move to a tech hub where entry-level contract jobs are easy to get. I will admit that it took a ton of energy to navigate this alone, but I couldn't keep working retail jobs living in my grandma's house. it took me a few months to build up to it and I scoped out possible areas first with my savings.

Pretty sure some companies would be willing to overlook the no diploma thing over the 6 year experience, though it might weigh on the final salary.

You can go back to college, and live off of student loans why you are at home. You will have to pay it back but it cover you until you can get back on your feet. Also if possible get some type of job any job while you are in school. Even if went back to school some people hiring hate gaps in workings. (that last part is what I was told, you might want to second viewpoint about that.
