My first exposure to those graphics was in flash games on the internet, so they always just had a weird janky feel to them. Like they were fan-made, and not remotely official.

then you couple that with the fact that the All-Stars version has a different feel to its physics, and the All-Stars version is by far my least favorite version. Weird sounding music, weird graphics, weird physics... It all just feels wrong to me and I don't like it at all.

Does anyone else share similar thoughts?

In the nes games perfectly clipping a piranha while jumping over a pipe feels amazing

On the snes version the hitboxes dont allow this

Also I swear fire mario wore white overalls when the game came out and the color faded to beige over the years, I fucking swear this is true

I prefer the All-Stars version, since it's what I grew up with.

I liked it

If you completely remove my biases towards the art that I have based on the flash games I experienced as a kid, I'd agree. From an objective standpoint, and when I try to forget about the flash games, the sprites look good. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with them really. They just evoke such strong strong feelings of "these are cheap and not right and feel weird and aren't good" in me.

I mean, I kind of agree. If you want to play SMB1, play the original.

I liked the graphics. I didn't care as much for the musical changes. Go Go Mario!! is so distorted that it honestly feels like a different theme. Bowser using his Super Mario Bros. 3 theme is pretty cool though. And I like the new animations at the end -- even if they looked like they were drawn in MS Paint.

I'd say the two improvements made are the addition of lanterns in the underground levels and the windows / thunder storms going on in Bowser's castle. Those add a lot to their respective environments.

On the whole, yeah, I'd probably sooner plug in the NES and play the original. But if I have the SNES hooked up and I don't feel like switching, I have no real complaints.

The camera in Super Mario Bros 3 seems more wonky in all stars than it does in the original. Otherwise I see no differences in physics

I'm talking almost exclusively about SMB1. I'll have to go back and check, but I think it had some physics changes.

Yea I didnt play the all stars version of SMB till recently when it came out on the Switch. I thought it was great, I loved the starry night levels. But yeah I guess I do prefer the original.

But all stars SMB2 > original SMB2. In fact, the Advance version is best lol

You ever notice in All-Stars SMB1, when you break a block high up, Mario sort of ascends higher? only like a few pixels higher, but it looks weird. Definitely doesn't happen in the original SMB.

Another positive of the All-Stars version are the clouds with smiley faces. They really feel like they flesh out Mario's world.

I'm playing through it and it's pretty fun. It's actually pretty challenging, in a good way. Tons of replay value too, since you can go for game completion + collect all the star coins + play through the Luigi version of the game
