the original snes version is. gba version isn't. gives somewhere around 2-3x as much gold/exp per battle and has a drastically lower encounter rate.

There's a pretty good grinding spot earlier on in the game near SimaFort (Swimmer's Fort) with these big boulder enemies (S.Idol). They are weak to fire, strangely enough, but watch out because they can cast a devastating ice spell. I believe you can use FirePuppy (Fire Whelp) to take one out with Ryu at full AP. There's a camp area nearby to restore HP/AP like an inn, but for free.

yeah grindy then. honestly if you're gonna tough it out with the snes version i'd recommend playing it on pc instead with the retranslation patch.

or if you're just craving an rpg to play on switch you could play bof1 which i think is also on there?

Is the encounter rate really that different? I'm replaying the GBA version currently and I still get in fights very frequently.

It's been years since I played the SNES version

Yea, in the GBA you can get to towns way quicker since that have fewer fights. I think it was reduced by 1/3 or 2/3.

it's been a long long time since i played it on snes but i remember it being common to get into an encounter in 2-4 steps. it was super toned down in the gba version. it may seem like you're getting into them very frequently, but you actually move really quickly in that version since they added a sprint button so you can cover a far greater distance without getting an encounter.

Older jRPGs are super grindy. Newer ones replaced the grind with more boring cutscenes.
