If you don't want to be active, stick most of it in an ETF that tracks the S&P500.

The part of it you aren't comfortable losing for a small period stick in a bond fund.

Make sure to keep enough of an emergency fund in cash.

A stock topic is pretty cool, I'll have to start following that

In all seriousness, I've improved my situation lately so I think now is the time to start figuring out investing. The story so far: I've spent the last few years paying down credit card debt and student loans. All high interest debt is gone and my student loans have low interest and the balance is low enough I'm just gonna let them clear out on their own from my $300~ monthly payments each month in the next couple years instead of continuing to focus on paying them down. Same thing with my auto loan. Right now is the first time I've ever been networth positive so I'm comfortable making this change in focus.

I keep a $3k balance in my chequeing account, which I use to pay off my credit cards every month which is where I pay for everything. I have $13k in savings account. My intent is to maintain $3k in chequeings and $10k in savings and then anything extra will go into whatever investment I want. I expect to get around $1k or more every month to put towards investing, and I also expect to get a $12k windfall in the next few months.

I think in the short term, I want to take a look at all the possible things I can invest in and weigh the pros and cons. Some I have an understanding of, some I have no clue what they are. Some topics to think about I have right now are:

Mutual funds, ETFs, Index funds, GIC's, Bonds, TFSAs, RRSPS, dividend paying stock, growth stocks, crypto, or physical value retaining assets.

Some of those might even be a different term for the same thing and I don't even know! Buying a rental property with some partners is also a possibility but won't happen for probably 2 years at least so I'm not just going to save money for that right now.

I think my intent is to end up with a list of a things I find worthwhile and, presuming the windfall comes through, put $2-3k in each of them and monitor how they do and how happy I am with the actual process of using that vehicle.

If anyone has any thoughts on any of those topics or investment vehicles I didn't list I'd love to hear them.

Right now what I don't want to do is just put all of my money in one long term investment and keep it there and then put all new money there. That might be what I end up doing later, but not till I'm satisfied that's the best choice.

Also I'm Canadian if that's relevant to anybody. I don't think it matters overall but I think GIC's, TFSA, and RRSP are Canadian specific investments. (TFSA and RRSP are supposedly analogous to Roth-IRA and IRA.
