after the PS5?

I think it was great that they had consistency and there was no room for confusion. But I also think after five systems the name scheme has gotten old, and "PlayStation 6" or "PS6" just don't really have the same ring as 1-5 do.

The sequential numbering kinda avoids brand confusion. I can kinda see it being an issue when we get into the double-digits, although 10 could be the PSX... oh wait.

There used to be a poster here who swore up and down they'd never call a console PS4 due to Japanese superstition surrounding the number.

Given that even that was trumped by branding I suspect they'll stick with numbers til at least the PS10.

There isn't a problem with 4 as such, it's the use of "shi" which is typically avoided with "yon", or in this case using the english word.

Eh, I wouldn't say the name really hurt the Vita. Aside from people mispronouncing it, there wasn't really any confusion surrounding the name. It was clearly Sony's new handheld, and its failure was due to other factors (price point, memory price, lack of real demand for a high-powered handheld, lack of support due to an unwillingness to commit development resources to high-powered handheld games...). By contrast, nearly a decade later, there are still people who don't understand that the 3DS is a distinct system from the DS and not just a new model with a 3D feature, which is one of the primary reasons it struggled to gain a foothold in its first year. The WiiU never really overcame the same problem.

The problem is, is that not too many people know that the Vita was a thing. And they don't realize that Nintendo not only took inspiration for the Switch from the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS, but also the PS Vita.
