All his wealth is tied up in amazon stock, so unless he has a buyer, any value those stocks are being quoted for is a made up number...and to realize that gain, he's actually have to sell the shares, which he has no intention of doing.

Thanks Timmy. Did your dad write that one for you again? Did he find a job already? No? Anyway, we'll talk after class.

Don't most of the richest people all have their money tied up in stocks or other assets? Stocks are far more liquid than property or say a sports team.

Bezos himself sells a few million shares every year. This year he sold 3 billion dollars worth in only 2 days.

Amazon trades about 5 million shares a day, which is around 15 billion dollars currently. Bezos has about 55 million shares now. If he wants to sell all his shares in the open market, he would probably do it over the course of 2 or 3 years so not to drop the stock price too much and would have to tell the SEC ahead of time. He would also need a good reason to sell, otherwise other investors will panic sell (driving down the price) when they find out. He could also sell his shares to another company or group of investors that has lot of cash available at a slight discount and get rid of most of it in one go.

Really more importantly, he's relatively youngish in billionaire terms. After you reach a certain point, that's what really matters. And he's already been up there for a long time as is.

Everyone knows all billionaires are basically poor if you ignore their investments. This is why they live in the ghetto and drive beaters to work.

Yes, it's also why they pay fewer in taxs then most normal people with a salary. And why they dont really care when said people and politicians demand it raised.

Jeff's salery is only a messily 80k compared to the billions of stock he sales each year. Why would someone in his circumstances care how much his base salary is taxed?
