It absolutely is a common defense against a label (online or offline).

The semantic defenses. Technical. (their thinking, a label only works if they fit 100% of the categories. Period. Rather than something like 15 of 25 criteria)

That's why so many can convince themselves they'd "moderate/centrists" when in actuality they are quite the extremist. I feel like they're in denial. So I think of them as denialists instead.
