It might hamper the experience depending on the movie, but I can't think of a single good movie that stops being good because you know the plot of it. Revealing a twist is one thing, but trailers absolutely should tell you what the story is.

a movie trailer should give an idea of what the movie is about

is that a divisive concept?

My only gripe is when the trailer gives away big moments of otherwise dull movies. Like, you put the coolest shit in a 30 second TV spot and now you don't have a movie.

Some people seem to think a trailer should only show footage from the first act before the plot gets started and nothing else.

I hate when they give away twists(Terminator 2 I'm looking at you), But I like when they give some idea of the ridiculous shit that happens.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 is another good example of a plot twist being spoilt by the trailer.

Terminator Salvation was ruined by that it gave away the whole movie in it....it's actually a decent movie but because if the trailer you're mostly left wondering why it hasn't happened yet when you watch it.

Calling it good is a stretch.

Terminator 2's trailer spoiled that Arnold was a good guy.

Thor Ragnarok's trailer spoiled that the Hulk was Thor's coliseum opponent.

Both of were fairly moderate to major spoilers that absolutely wrecked the overall pacing of the films.

And I'm in the camp of not wanting to see or hear about trailers for movies I want to see. Visual spoilers are a thing, I like being surprised by what I see or hear. The same concept goes if a jackass reviewer or marketer highlights a film having a major twist.... thanks, douche... now I know to expect a surprise plot veer.

That wasn't really a spoiler, we knew Hulk was in the movie prior.

I mean, no. Sucks for T2, but the movie is still one of the best action movies of all time even knowing the twist, and Ragnarok is absolutely amazing and well paced throughout.

I said it was decent but the trailer takes away from it, I think if people went in blind they would be more satisfied because they would be surprised by the plot twist and be more memorable in a good way from it rather than the negative side that it spoiled it.

People that pay attention to contract stuff and the inner workings of marvel knew it. Most absolutely didn't know and the trailer showing the Hulk was the first inkling of that. The trailer spoiled the leadup to the fight in particular and the pacing pre-Hulk in general.

And T2 was great, but go back and watch it just pretending that Arnold was a bad guy from the get go. It's a completely different movie-going experience and makes his turn to being on the Connor's side genuinely shocking.

People thinking that every little thing is a spoiler nowadays is absurd. You can't even talk about any movie/TV show/video game that someone hasn't seen (no matter how old it is) because of this "NO SPOILERS" rule in society. I once got in trouble on a message board because I casually mentioned Mufasa's death without using spoiler tags.

I mean, even the Russo Brothers (directors of Infinity War and Endgame) said about a year ago that spoilers for *those* two movies are now fair-game, and Infinity War and Endgame are only 1 to 2 years old. So even Word of God basically said "spoiler talk for those movies is now open even if they're still recent".

Of course people have the right to enjoy entertainment however they want, and I would never go out of my way to ruin a twist or surprise for anyone. But there's a difference between not wanting to be spoiled and just being ridiculous about it.

It definitely would have been cool to have no clue that Hulk was in Ragnarok until he showed up in the movie

Sure, I get that. But there's a difference between stuff that's been out for years and stuff that's yet to come out.

I stopped watching movie trailers a few years ago and I definitely prefer it. I did it when I learned the director doesnt have control of the trailer most of time, so can often is misrepresenting the movie by the trailer makers.

I think it actively improves comedies and horror films especially, because the trailer makers often load the trailers with the best jokes/scares in those movies.

I prefer 20 second teasers over full 1-2 minute trailers. Trailers almost always give away story beats and structure of a movie, and enough that I often don't feel I even have to watch the movie, especially if the acting isn't top-notch. Like K181 and FearAndLoathing said, experiencing some key moments/jokes/scares/etc beforehand ruin a lot of the fun for me, both visually and conceptually. I would rather go in blind for any tv show, movie, game, or even album, than have some marketing chud give me a synopsis.

You watch all the trailers you want. I'm watching as close to none as I can.

I actually don't mind spoilers that much, and any movie that relies on a twist to be good was never good in the first place. Don't get me wrong, a good twist can elevate a good movie, but it shouldn't be the whole point. It should never be "this movie sucks now because I wasn't surprised"

Because that will end the movie business? Just expect digital and DVD/Blu-Ray prices to go way up.

Air Force one literally shows the main baddie dying.

executive decision shows that the main star wont make it.

you know if ESB was made today the trailer would end with the face off between Vader and Luke and cutoff right when Vader replies. No

I was super pissed when I watched the trailer for Shane.

(Major Spoilers)
Not only does it show him shooting the henchman, but it then shows him spin around and shoot the boss bad guy too.
