I was at the Harvester with some friends and the staff now have to do everything. If you want to go to the Salad Bar you have to stand 3 feet away and bark orders at some tiny teenage waitress to grab everything you want.

And the drinks are no longer self service so the girls (who are understaffed) are run off their feet doing it for every table as well as the generic day to say table service.

Then I tried to leave a tip and my friends looked at me like I was trying to hump a fish and are just like "it's not mandatory here, that's why it's more expensive (I always rag on it for being expensive to eat out to wind them up. Burger King is like 7:50 here which is like $12) so you dont tip"

And nobody tips delivery people. It's unheard of.

I don't like it during normal times but now more than ever just give these dudes a tip. Imagine the shit they deal with all day every day from idiots and conservatives on top of an intense workload and the possibility of getting sick.

What's a tenner to you? To that single mother girl it's the difference between whether or not the radiator is on tonight.

Why be so cheap?

We do carry-outs for people where I work, which is to say taking cases of wine out to peoples car. And almost no one tips, it's actually become rather annoying. Because I know in the back of their head they know they should.

Hell, I tip at least a buck just for someone bring a small order out to me at a sandwich place that is still just taken out only.

People are shitty.

Ya, I kinda figured that. Which ironically is true of a lot of homeless people....the by choice part.

No it's very true

I've worked with a lot of homeless people, got them jobs and apartments and then they just quit and go back to the street because they prefer it to the responsibility of everyday life and work

People so utterly massively underestimate how big a role drugs and mental illness play in homelessness

Legalizing all drugs and better standards of mental healthcare would cripple homelessness rates inside of a couple of years

Yet no political group is advocating for that, its infuriating

Truth.
Honestly, most people couldn't care less about homeless people.
They just don't want to have to see them.

There are several homeless communities in my city..as small city....and the only homeless people that get talked about are the ones that hang around downtown. Which overlooks at least one, more or less established community that is off in the woods by the railroad station.

Meanwhile, my town is talking about converting a hotel to...yet more... high-end luxury apartments.

But ya, the suggestions you made would go a long way.....Unfortunately we, as a nation, don't care.

No one is saying people should work below minimum wage. What we are saying is pay your workers appropriately. Tipping is a stupid practice. UK got this one right. Workers are paid so they dont have to rely on tips. Id rather pay more up front than tip 20% (which I do).

Normal carryout isnt a service one is expected to tip. I order food, walk in, pay, and pick it up. Neither the restaurant nor the workers provided me with any additional service like they do when someone dines in. If you are carrying cases of stuff to someones car, you have a case, but I still dont think it should be expected unless its several trips. It doesnt make someone a shitty person.

I also just don't like it when a waiter/waitress does the bare minimum and then expects a great tip. I tip accordingly to the level of service I get.

I once went to Fuddruckers, a do it yourself burger bar, and while I was eating, a "waitress" came up and asked how I was, which was good, and if I needed anything, which I didn't. When I was leaving the restaurant I noticed her give me a mean stink eye, because I left no tip, I'm assuming.

I choose to tip the person that brings the food out to me...a simple sandwich.

Yet, it doesn't seem kinda nice of someone to tip on carrying out hundreds of dollars of wine to their Audi SUV?

In the US, that is absolutely true. Their pay scale is predicated on tips. In other countries where tipping is not the culture, those servers are already getting fairly compensated without tips. Now that isnt to say that you cant tip if you want to. Sure, everyone (including me) could use an extra tenner (whatever that is; assuming its currency) for doing good work. Your friends are morons for trying to make you feel bad for tipping, but tipping isnt necessary in those circumstances.
