Or is that just a defense hack on the left (I say hacks cause most of the left agrees it is crazy it seems) use cause Republicans criticized it first, and if so what do up close crotch shots add to that narrative?

Yes. And from what I hear a lot of commentary on religious conservative "family values". (Which is probably what really has known filthy theocrat Ted Cruz bothered.)

But the way it went about relaying that message undermines its efforts and ultimately just gives pedos more wanking material.

I mean you can certainly make the argument that it goes beyond what is necessary to make its point, but its point is most definitely that hypersexualization of children is bad (and that patriarchal, conservative religious beliefs are bad as well).

the people claiming its message is critical of oversexualization are correct

the people claiming its cinematography is sexually exploitative are also correct

the former camp often point to the director's (doucoure) stated intent, the latter camp often point to the producer's (zangro) controversial history

basically it's a trainwreck of a situation, unless one's of the "beat people over the head with shock" school of social activism (compare: pasolini's infamous cinematic metaphorical critique of fascism)

I havent seen the movie, but from what I have heard it starts off on the negatives of far right Islam, when the dad flies out to go pick up his second wife. It alienates the daughter where she seeks out the cuties group to feel appreciated.

They then see lewd music videos (very similar to WAP coincidentally) and see the response how everyone says its great and gets so many likes. The group then tries to mimic it. The movie ends when the main character rejects these lewd dances and opts to do more traditional childhood activities like jump rope.

Overall the message of the movie is much more a conservative message of traditional family values, against the over sexualization of women in our culture and the damage it does to kids. I think the main complaint comes from the movie having waaaay too much sexual shots of the kids, and could have made the point just fine w/out most of that stuff.

Just Netflix trying to shock and awe and then go "how dare you" whenever someone objects or says they went to far.

It certainly feels like some people are only defending the movie because they want to make it about political sides when sexualizing children for profit is not something that should be defended.

I dont have a way to know how the narrative would be affected (because Im not watching it) but even so, Im 99% positive the exploitative scenes could be cut without losing anything whatsoever.

Youve literally made like a topic a day about this. At the very least once a week. Youre just trolling for more bites. So like he said:

You could've fooled me because you hit the nail on the head. Though the girl at the beginning in general just doesn't like the restrictive Islamic culture and the "cuties" group was her way out of it (she sees them having fun while she wasn't having any of it). But yeah, this movie is the Artsy Fartsy Indie Oscar Bait kind of film where it follows the "show but don't tell", which is the reason why the movie is never in your face about what it's trying to convey. Though you can see why this movie is trying to make you feel uncomfortable as possible with the dance scenes, hence the camera angles and all that, which yeah I can see why it would rub people the wrong way (because it honestly does feel exploitive, like do these girls realize what's going on when filming this?). Anyway it's all in the main character girls perspective and it doesn't really say what's good and what's bad, but it's generally a story about a girl coming of age and her finding herself from 2 completely different cultures.
