At both debates they've been questioned on this and both times they've responded with a crappy (non) answer "we should let the voters decide"

This is a bad answer to begin with. It sounds nice but there's a reason why Democrats and Republicans wanted the exact opposite back in 2016. This idea could easily lead to not allowing a Supreme Court appointment in the last 1.5 years of a president's term, and then in the last half of a president's term, etc.

But not only that, it would be so easy to respond "Barack Obama nominated Merrick Garland when Antonin Scalia died in February 2016 but the Republican Senate would not allow a hearing or vote on his appointment because they wanted the voters to decide. In reality you don't actually care about the sanctity of the American government and just want what's best for yourselves."

They just come across that they do want to pack the Supreme Court but won't say it out loud because they know it would be unpopular.

I'm not going to lose sleep over it if they pack the court since Republcans started this trend in the first place.

It is popular with democrats, they just dont want to send republicans out to vote for trump because they care more about stacking the Supreme Court with conservatives than anything else

Ruling it out would be a dumb move too, especially when Trump hasnt even started ramming ACB through yet

They need to pack the court since the Republicans are so Machiavellian that they'll do whatever it takes to delay getting another liberal justice on the court.

This. They didn't make the game dirty, but now it is the only way you can fight back.

After Merrick Garland, all bets are off. Don't like it? Be mad at the Senate for setting the precedent.

The only way to solve this beyond the current gentleman's agreement is with a Constitutional amendment. Otherwise you'll just have nonstop back and forth packings of the Supreme Court when each party is in power.

Problem with that though is there's not nearly as much consensus on this as there was with the presidential two term limit.

Why is it reasonable that the Supreme Court, which has the constitutional ability to be expanded as needed, has remained for 150 years while our population has grown ten-fold and the house and senate have expanded accordingly?

what would be the actual problem with adding justices, other than that they might not agree with your beliefs?

They should pack the court. Also Kamala's non-answer when describing the demographic of the current SC was actually one of her best answers of the night even if it didn't directly answer Pence's bullshit slimeball grandstanding.

A majority of voters think the nomination should wait until after the election, so

What happens if a SC justice dies or retires on December 31 the year before the next election.

Or if you won't allow appointments in the election year at all, what if an SC justice dies or retires on November 30th the year before the election.

Besides that, if the President and Senate majority are both the same party from now on, there will be no question about appointing a new SC justice in an election year.

Like I said, "let the people decide" sounds nice but in reality it arises from partisan BS and is bad for the American government.
