Are they too generic?

What about bats or spiders as enemies?

It always depends on the game. The first thing that came to mind oddly enough was South Park and the Stick of Truth, and the Mr. Hankey sewer level with the poo family and crab people. If it's that unique and stands out to be so memorable, it's a great thing. Most of the time, it's cookie cutter and uninteresting.

They're okie dokie.

Best one is the beginning of Oblivion, if only for the sunshine and nature and nice music immediately after when you pop out into the overworld.
And also for the 'Welcome to Tamriel, champ. Go explore to your heart's content.' message you get as soon as you leave.

Depends on the puzzles involved

Tales of Symphonia? F that.

Radiata Stories? Once you remember the shape of the city it makes so much sense why the sewers are shaped like they are and I could figure out where to go just based off that now. Otherwise, was horrible as a kid when I couldn't remember it and got frustrated.

I hate them but I think mainly for reasons you're supposed to hate them.

Usually the sewer level is where you end up after the game pulls a "your princess is in another castle" routine on you. You are meters away from the final quest and the floor gives out, you fall through the entire game and now you're stuck in the goddamn sewers. Every time it's that carpet swept under your feet thing.

So I associate sewer levels with failing and going back to square 1 in the narrative.

I'm okay with 'em, but they usually have boring qualities, like flooding/reflooding areas, controlling gates and switches, poisonous monsters, etc. I enjoyed the Novigrad sewers in Witcher 3 specifically because they were mostly dry tunnels with secret areas and tons of alternate entrances.

Nice responses.

I understand that sewer levels seem bland and can be shoehorned into games to underwhelming effect.

What makes a sewer level engaging or exciting?

If you can add something about the sewers that is rewarding I think that would make it feel like a payoff rather than a punishment.

Suppose you get some new skill or weapon that's sewer or poison themed or something (and is genuinely useful). I think what makes sewers feel sucky is that they never feel like they add to the narrative or move the game foward. It often just feels like you're in limbo till you get back to the "real" game.

This, especially since the surface of the water/liquid shit wasn't see-through. Still, it did succeed in making a good atmosphere, as it's one of the very few sewer levels I actually kinda like.

Fuck that sewer level from Shadows of the Empire. Creepy music, scary enemies, dark as hell, confusing to navigate, and an annoying boss. That's definitely my most hated.
