My gang just got shipwrecked and now Cecil needs to go with Palom and Porom to do the Paladin trial. I was under the impression this was supposed to happen around the halfway point but this feels super early.

Thats extremely early. Hell, its so early that by the time I get to the actual halfway point of that game I forget he was ever a Dark Knight to begin with.

Ah okay good to know. I was worried the game mightve been way shorter than I expected.

so far I can tell this wouldve been revolutionary back in the day. Dragon Quest 3 basically laid out the groundwork of how an adventure/exploration-focussed RPG should be structured, and Final Fantasy IV is doing the same for character and story-driven RPGs

Oh, it definitely was. That was a huge moment, and not only that, but the fact that the story is integrated into the battle in how you win by NOT attacking was really interesting.

Ive played FFV and VII but the ATB system is a lot more noticeable in this one. 5 and 7 both still felt like normal turn based games but this one really does feel active. Especially with the way certain spells/skills have casting time and dont just attack instantly

For long awhile, FF would alternate between "systems" and "narrative" focus.
Hopefully, you're playing the PSP port of FF4, which makes a decent attempt at both.

I'd put you in like the 25 to 35 percent range.

Still my all time favorite Final Fantasy game.

Yes it is, and that's even before you get to the weird mobile/Wii pseudo-sequel.

The PSP version had The After Years right? That game story wise is pretty bad but if you're a huge fan of 4 it's worth a play once.

May I suggest DS/PSP FF3?
It's really great, up until that marathon final dungeon.

ive played a bit of it but quit early on due to other things in life taking up my time. Ill definitely get around to it but I like to switch up genres to keep every game fresh, in a way. Probably gonna do DKC Returns followed by Shadows of Valentia into Chains of Olympus before heading back into a traditional rpg

Magic wise? lol Barely. The highest healing he gets is Cura which does pitiful healing by that point. His only good spell is Esuna

Woah Cecils sprite is so similar to the Knight class in ff1 and 5, with his little crown thing. Also, I guess the Cover command is a reference to Cecils cover command, eh? Same with Monk Kick, Rydia Summon, and Dragoon Jump

Halfway part is when you get to the dwarves. You're still really early on in the game.

FF4 is a culmination of ideas that made up FF 1, 2, and 3.

It's the first "big epic Final Fantasy" that essentially set the tone for every game that followed it.
