I remeber upgrading from 320x240 to 640x480 more.

Looking back that felt like going from SD to HD at the time.

Depends on the game and situation.

I remember playing 3d rendered games on integrated graphics and relying on software rendering. The jump from software to hardware rendering was waaaay more than going from 640 to 800

That's how it felt when I went from using composite cables to component cables back in 2005.

1024x768 was when I would have started paying attention to or caring about resolutions

I can only sort of remember when I upgraded to 1024x768 and I think it was still mostly 720i, would have been sometime in 2008. So I was likely a fair bit behind the curve.

That TV kind of sucked though, I remember thinking that even with the higher resolution lol.

I upgraded to 1024 when battlefield 2 came out, what a massive difference from 800x600

The first game I played at 1024x768 was Shadow of the Empire, still one of the best Star Wars games to date. I feel like graphics really took off around that time for PC. SOTE was also released on the N64, but it looked sooooooo much better on PC.
