Just put the last four numbers.
If it comes up just express that you were being prudent with your information, with the understanding that they will need the whole number if you get the spot.

The job application will not let me move forward unless I provide the whole number.

keep in mind that if there's ANY competition, they'll absolutely throw your application in the trash instead of waiting for you to forward more info. HR looks for any reason to reduce the pile.

They probably want it to run a background check

You could not put it but you run the risk of whoever is reviewing the applications just tossing it in the round file and moving on with those that have all the required information.

I will give it to them when they offer me the job but I'm just really uneasy when I'm just applying right now.

You can't legally employ someone without a social. So if ones not provided on an application that app gets auto sorted to trash.

No, I get that. That is why I don't do that. But it is the alternative.
Basically, the average applicant has no rights....the American workforce is completely whipped, it's embarrassing.

you could call the 3 major credit reporting agencies and ask to freeze or lock your file.

so if anyone tries to open up some cards under your name it wont work

i think you can do this online too but i would just call to be sure.

You are 100 percent well within your rights to not give them that until they hire you. They are also 100 percent well within their rights to not hire you for not providing it.

Being somewhat protective of you SSN isn't a pretty common practice.
And just because you do the hiring doesn't mean shit about you.

Back in the day when I was in college, I applied for an internship with a city government, and I had to give them my SSN in order to apply. I interviewed, but they did not offer me the position. HOWEVER a group from China hacked into their database and my SSN was compromised.

I was insanely pissed - I didn't get the job and my identity was compromised.

Yup. I mean, dont go posting it or handing it out to scammers over the phone, but yeah, its not secure. Its out there. Fortunately, so is everyone elses so odds are it wont be an issue.

I understand your concern TC, but I think ID theft through a digital job application is a tremendous rarity, and it's something you need to put on the application to legally apply for the job. Not doing so, as many have said, and I know from experience having 15+ years background as a hiring manager for both corporate run and family owned businesses, they won't accept the application as valid.

They have to know your social security number if they're going to hire you. And as long as you're applying with a legitimate company, it's pretty damn rare to have your identity stolen via a job application.

I get the fear, but if they are a legitimate company, odds are they will ask for it.
