It seemed like around 2006 people were still pretty normal then they started talking about all this weird shit. Overly religious conservatives and liberal nonsense. I'm not sure if people even knew what that was 15 years ago.

I agree smart phones and google and facebook ruined everything. People used to socialize and talk about sports. Some of these companies are completely evil too how they attempt to control information and subliminal nonsense.. Greed went crazy in this world.

Social media was a mistake. It basically allows people with wild ideas to connect with each other and reinforce their beliefs where before someone would get a crazy idea in their head, bounce it off the hopefully normal and balanced people around them, get shut down, and likely be disabused of their notion.

Defintiely when social media started.

I'm not sure. Social media and information algorithms are some of the biggest causes for it, but the fact that this was very accurately predicted in Metal Gear Solid 2 in 2001 (the 'junk data' prediction, see video below) makes me believe that it was already on it's way back then.
Perhaps public access to the internet itself was what kicked it off?

I'd say about the time people started farming. As I understand it, that's basically what lead to most of the shitty things people do to each other. If you're living in small hunter-gatherer tribes, you have to treat everyone decently just to survive and there isn't really much reason to fight with other tribes when you can just move somewhere with better food options. Not to mention you'll probably want to intermix somewhat with the other tribe so you don't end up banging your family.

Farming leads to people accumulating lots of resources, which leads to too many people living in too small of an area and people forcing people to work for them, and specializing your food means a bad crop is more likely to lead to famine, and people have more reason to fight over land and resources.
