It's not so much the individual elements that are unique, but the combination of them. I can't think of another open world RPG (that aims to have a level of choice and consequence comparable to CRPGs of old), based on a popular tabletop game in said genre, overseen by the creator of that tabletop game (and developed by big fans of it that exude passion), set in a large, detailed city, with a AAA budget and the scope and quality that come with that, and so on.
If you're into all of that, it could be something truly special. Otherwise, the fuss might seem like it's for nothing. EffectAndCause posted... Or does it do the same things were used to but just does them well?So I guess it's closer to that. If there's one thing it aims to do differently from most games, it's the level of interactivity during dialogue and similar scenes, It's claimed you'll be able look around at different characters, their actions and their body language, and e.g. pull a gun, call someone out or run away if you feel something is up. Whether CDPR will accomplish that remains to be seen of course. I seem to remember Bioware making similar claims about Mass Effect and then half-assing it. There may be other innovative things in there, but it's hard to say without actually playing it. There's been talk about being able to change Lifepaths throughout the game (and other aspects relating to progression, like finishing the game while "failing" the main quest), which would be cool, if not completely new, but I'm not sure of the truth of that. ... The setting is basically completely unused in video games
Plus The Witcher 3 at least had a depth of dialogue and choice in quests that hasn't been even close to matched in any other AAA game to date, you pretty much have to look at classic CRPGs (and newer ones like Divinity and Disco Elysium) to find anything that does it as well or better ...
