Ffff....ok so I bought and moved into the piece of shit 130 yr old house today. What could go wrong right? First hin I notice is the mf took all the appliances. All of em. Ever have nightmares about nasty bathrooms with holes in the floor? Yo. Big fucking hole where the washer was/drained. But he covered it with a towel at least All the frozen food we brought is ruined. Exposed wires for my dog to chew on where the stove was.
I dont have one door that actually locks out of the 4 entry points so mostly my house is on an honor system for security. The ductwork is absolute garbage, one vent was rattling and I had to reattach the ductwork, one vent i pulled to see if the carpet was secured and i could see my fucking basement, it's barely attached.

I could go on and on but basically everywhere I look in this house pisses me off. The kitchen faucet works but isnt attached. Loose bricks that fell from the steps that have been just sitting where they fell for years. Soooooooo much work to do and I'm 99% sure I just heard what I hope was a mouse run across the drop ceiling (which will be removed eventually)

Whoever the primary decision maker involved in acquiring the house did so in an incredibly irresponsible manner. This is all shit you should be prepared for far in advance.

Wouldn't you discuss the permanence of appliances before closing the deal?

You know there are these things called home inspections that should more or less be mandatory when you are buying a house.

Easy to say. You cant really kick the tires when the place is occupied. Ever buy an old house before? Not my first rodeo, you roll the dice sometimes. Neither myself nor my inspector found anything catastrophic, just a fuck ton of small to medium repairs.

We did and the appliances were part of the deal. This guy from what I can tell has no money so there's really no point in pursuing it. The appliances werent great by any means but I was going to use them until the spring or so. Even suing wouldn't be worth my time as I cant imagine the court putting more than a few hundred bucks value on them.

See above. I paid $400 for one and got an 83 page report. Nothing catastrophic but there's a world of difference between seeing it on paper and seeing it in person, and an inspector wont find every little thing. We lived 200 miles away and took a road trip to see it once and it was occupied so I couldnt really dig in or do a proper final walkthrough

obviously I'm not familiar with all the details of your home purchase and the contract you signed, but it really seems like your real estate agent didn't represent or your interests very well...that 25k you mentioned in the last topic is gonna be gooooone son

also there's a 1986 Tom Hanks movie called "The Money Pit" that I think maybe you and your GF should have watched ahead of time

What's done is done. I think the last owners were the "money pit" couple, they bought it when it was in desperate need of some basic repairs/maintenance (people before them were old af and had it for 40 yrs) and just never did it for whatever reason.

I still think $25k is plenty to fix critical things and prevent further deterioration and I can do a lot of the work myself which saves a ton of money. I'm not planning a full restore/renovation, just enough to make it marketable and comfortable enough for someone who didnt grow up in the fucking depression lol. A lot of work but I have the time

that's not how the house buying process works... or you made a series of many bad decisions and were scammed at every step of the process.

I'm definitely open to bad decisions were made, but minus the appliances and a few odd quirks that got overlooked I had an idea what I was getting into. Not sure I got scammed though, my agent even helped me save $6k on the list price by knowing the selling agent is a dishonest guy. Listing agent wanted to accept my initial offer BUT still be allowed to show, so basically he could lie and say there were other offers. My guy wasnt having that and told me ain't nobody looking at this house, stand firm, decline the offer and shoot a smaller one again in a couple weeks
