Beat the first chapter.

I could tell Sayaka would be either the first killer or the first victim, and figured out it was Leon midway through because he was kind of boring compared to the other characters. What I did not expect was Junko's death. I knew someone would have to die to prove that things were serious, but I expected it to be Leon, the psychic, or the fat guy.

This wasn't particularly directed at your comment, but more with comments like KPs that imply the games can't be enjoyed without caveats.

I've been accused before of straight up lying about how much I like DR2 and V3 to try and convince people to play them.
I wouldn't accuse you of lying, but it's definitely my opinion that for most people the game can't be enjoyed without caveats. You have to be REALLY okay with anime tropes to fully enjoy the series.

DR1's social point system is much more obtuse than the sequels. That really just depends on the character. I wouldn't worry about it too much, just hang out with who you wanna hang out with.

Definitely don't look it up, because the amount of points it takes to max a character's hang out events in DR1 is a spoiler for approximately how long they last in the sorry for just about all of them. This is was fixed in the sequels where everything is normalized to the same numbers.

however just spend the time how you want, if you really feel the need to you can get any ones you missed after beating the story.

I played Danganronpa before I played Ace Attorney. I never felt like Ace Attorney lived up to what i was expecting. Yes, DR has flaws, but I felt like I routinely hit much bigger ones in Ace Attorney. I know it's the mascot of Board 8, and a total darling that I don't dare speak ill of, but I'd rather play a new Danganronpa than a new Ace Attorney.

Anagram, do NOT look anything up. The ability to be inadvertently spoiled is absurdly high. Even for simple little things.

As for the first trial, (a) it's meant to be easy, and (b) it's written for people who aren't English-native speakers. There's still enough meat in the development of that story to make it interesting, even if there's a lot of really basic shit happening there.

If we're talking blanket statement, I would prefer a new DR to a new AA.

If we're talking reality, the new DR (which they did in fact start hiring up for last year) won't be written by Kodaka, and a new AA would assumbaly still be the AA5/6 team, so....would by default have to give the advantage to a new AA.

Funny to me that the DR team without Kodaka is a thing to worry about (hello Zanki Zero), while with AA the last thing you want is Takumi back.

I've played four major Japanese series over the course of the last two years (Persona, Resident Evil, Phoenix Wright, and now Danganronpa), and only RE hasn't had a weird trans character issue. Oh well.

2 > V3 > 1

I also think I'd be more excited for a new DR release than an AA release, despite thinking the latter is better. With a new DR comes the predictions and fan discussions, which I don't think I've seen from any other franchise. It's a really unique feeling and I'm really surprised that something as silly as Danganronpa can actually achieve it.

Also surprising he made both AAI games considering how AAI2 is such a step up from his other works

It's really badly written, has bad graphics and even worse gameplay. People dismiss any negatives of it as taking it too seriously, even though the games are extremely self-serious (much moreso than AA and Zero Escape) and demand 40+ hours of your time. It's nothing like AA in general (I've only played 1), although it's a little like 1-5 in that it's very long and drawn out for no reason.

Definitely. Enough other people do it for me nowadays so that's good. As long as people don't feel crazy for not loving it.

A lot of people nowadays do say that 2 is massively better than 1 though. That's not true either. It has a couple nice twists to the formula but it's 90% more of the same (which is good if you liked 1, but it seems like even people who do like started to get sick of the formula by the 3rd game).

It is pretty close to AA with worse court segments and not fun mini-games shoehorned in.

Story and characters are great though and if you like AA you should like these too!

This. You have to solve the case then assemble an annoying Manga-style puzzle that recaps the murder from start to finish. I'd recommend Googling these puzzles when you reach them to save time (by this point you know the outcome anyway).

DR1 blew me away. Absolutely loved it.

DR2 feels bloated and slowly paced by comparison. I got like 40% through and quit.

DR3 I hear mixed opinions on.

It's just really damn hard to write tight and efficient stories. Like exponentially harder. The difference between AA 1-4 and 1-5 is the most clear example of that. You can clearly feel the massive effort into refining the original cases, that was just missing from 1-5.

AA always felt a lot slower to me than DR...though I guess it varies more on a case to case basis with AA. A bad AA case can feel much more seperated from the rest of a game than a bad DR case, making it feel all the more painful. AA4 is probably the biggest offendor there.

Anagram posted...

This improves significantly in following games, but even as a megafan it's never going to be super good.

As for the stuff that's not specifically a "mini game" but is instead an in-trial mechanic, I think a few of those actually get pretty great.

There's a new one in V3 that's BGM music is so good I could do it for hours.
