Danganronpa is good in its own right but Ace Attorney it ain't

Not to say I wouldn't put DR2 above some AA games (not sure I'd put DR1 above any of them and I definitely wouldn't put UDG above any), but they're good at different things.

I would absolutely put V3 above most of the AAs, to be honest. Probably not the absolute top tiers like T&T and AAI2, but it's up there for sure.

UDG is just what happens when a visual novel team decides they want to make Resident Evil 4 for some reason. V3 is a return to form with plot twists that still rent space in my head two years after I played the game.

I liked AA 1-5. Yeah, it was long, but there were a lot of twists to it. And now that I think about it, that actually probably makes it the closest to a Danganronpa case, considering everything in the second and third game was very elaborate and protracted in terms of the trials.

This. You have to solve the case then assemble an annoying Manga-style puzzle that recaps the murder from start to finish. I'd recommend Googling these puzzles when you reach them to save time (by this point you know the outcome anyway).

DR1 blew me away. Absolutely loved it.

DR2 feels bloated and slowly paced by comparison. I got like 40% through and quit.

DR3 I hear mixed opinions on.

The end-of-trial puzzles aren't really that hard to decipher. There's one or two moments where I remember them expecting something I hadn't anticipated, but going back through all of the case and remembering how it played out is a fun way to put a bow on everything.

DR2 is bloated in the sense that the islands are slow and annoying to navigate, and the pet is completely pointless. The two things that really stand out to me about 2 compared to 1 is the difference in how much we get out of each trial, and how the cast really relies on ensemble performances rather than having any stand-outs. Except for Nagito, of course.

I strongly disagree on that, azuarc. DR1 is all about an ensemble cast and watching them bond with each other and form friendships/rivalries as the numbers dwindle. As the story progresses, the deaths have greater impact because of this bond. DR2, meanwhile, is not an ensemble story whatsoever. There are some pairings, sure. But for the most part, it feels like a collection of individuals who like each other well enough, but for the most part don't really interact with anyone other than their one, designated partner.

DR3 combines the best aspects of these with a great cast of individuals who play off each other as an ensemble extremely well.

I don't know if I can really agree with that last point. I thought there were several characters in DR2 that stand out far above most other characters in the franchise on their individual merits alone, whether that's just as a fun and enjoyable character or regarding actual impact.

I'd say V3 is the one that has the strongest as an ensemble, while 2 is weaker as an ensemble and stronger individually! I think both do a good job at each thing, but if I had to weigh them it's where I would land.

It really comes down to your taste in characters I suppose, and DR personalities are so far flung in their own directions that characters some people hate can easily be other people's most loved and vice versa.

I admit it's not the most popular opinion, but I felt like none of the characters in 2 were very good. The only two I thought were interesting were gone by the time two cases were done and one of them turned out to be kinda disappointing.

I feel like Anagram should have made a playthrough topic at this point instead of giving updates in a topic where everyone's bickering about other games in the series lol

despite all these flaws I still think the games a weirdly engrossing and fun to play (even when the minigames objectively suck). I also think most of the characters end up being memorable and somewhat appealing, even the ones who are meant to be annoying.

V3 cast is fine. It's just that the bad characters are really bad.

I used to hate one V3 character, but I turned around on her pretty hard.

Right now the character I like the least is at the bottom of the "OK" list.

At least the series as a whole does pick up after the first half of DR1, which is the weakest

but uhhhh yeah the nonsense doesn't stop so

I am actually enjoying it pretty well. I've been doing blurbs because the playthrough topics make playing the game take three times longer because I have to type out everything. I'm okay with the nonsense.

For reference, I am currently at the part where Kyoko tells everyone she has amnesia.

I don't want to get into it in this topic, but I did post a character ranking a few years ago. Thoughts have changed since then, and generally speaking I like the V3 cast but there are a few in my lowest tier.

Beat the game. Here are some thoughts.

• Halfway through the game, I thought Yasuhiro would be the mastermind because he seemed too useless to be anything else.
• I figured out Junko was still alive when the first two photos showed up and she was the only "dead" student not to appear in them... My reasoning turned out to be 100% wrong, but I was still right, so I'm counting that as technically a victory. Although, truth be told, I thought "Junko's" reaction to dying was odd, so I'd thought she might turn out to be alive the whole time anyway.
• I was shocked when Taka died. I was certain he'd eventually lose his moral pillar status and murder someone.
• Who was the guy in the rocketship at the very beginning who Monokuma kills?
• In the bad ending where they stay and have kids, Byakura is holding a picture of Toko... Is she supposed to be dead for some reason? I didn't understand that at all.
• I like the ambiguous ending, but there's no way the sequels could let that stand. I predict it was all true, but that the Tragedy is an alien invasion where the aliens all look like Monokuma. Why? Because that's the silliest possible explanation.
• Overall, I did enjoy this game. I didn't mind the nonsense because the game never made any attempt at being set in reality. I also liked how it at least made an attempt to have killers you don't expect, unlike Phoenix Wright, where the killer is almost always the most obvious person (some cases excepted).
