The sick joke in The Punisher is that anyone who watched that show should have understood the anvil-hammer subtlety of its anti revenge story. They should have realised the message the show was sending was that this is not justice, its not morals, its not health or cleansing. It's just a sick man hurting people and going down a spiral.

But I guess that subtext was lost on a lot of people. Do we call it subtext when it's more or less written in big fucking letters across every episode? THIS MAN IS NOT A GOOD PERSON

My neighbor has a "first responder" decal on his truck that has white, red, and blue. But the red stripe is replacing one of the black ones so it looks like a little Russian flag inside of the US flag, and he's a trump supporter so I find it funny.

Here's the thing: the Punisher is cool.

So no, people don't get the message. No matter how obvious it is or how loudly it's shouted. They'll take that iconography and instead use its pop-culture power to boost their own signal.

This is why I think Jabba the Hutt is a much healthier representation of a gangster, for society, than someone like Vito Corleone. It doesn't matter that The Godfather portrays the mafia in a negative light, and that the characters all destroy each other's lives. Because they're still cool. Real gangsters love them. But Jabba the Hutt is not cool. Real gangsters do not want to be identified with Jabba the Hutt.

This is a widespread trend, with stuff like The Punisher backfiring and elevating what it's intended to criticise.

This is actually a good point. The problem with anti-heroes like this is that people identify with them, and their egos get in the way of any message the work of art may have about the anti-hero's behavior. Ironically, Jabba the Hutt is a much more *realistic* portrait of a gangster than any Corleone, or Tony Montana.

I honestly think Jabba the Hutt is one of the most socially beneficial villains that's got pop-culture power these days. And then, on the flip side, you've got people like Mitch McConnell gleefully and proudly identifying with Darth Vader. You can be damn sure McConnell wouldn't be bragging about how he resembles Jabba the Hutt.

Punisher as a character would be agianst police violence and would hate for cops to use his symbol. The creator of Punisher has stated as such.
