The music, the creepy isolation, the music, Kurt Russell, the practical effects, that fucking badass ending, etc.....it's my favorite horror movie of all time and in my top 10 of all time.

I watched it awhile back, its well made, but horror is basically my least favorite genre and the thing didn't really change my mind on that.

That's what happens when you focus on practical effects. When something is actually real, it holds up much, much better over time. It's also got a genuinely good concept and the writing is fantastic.

Great movie

The cast performed so damn well and the setting was brilliant. I think Ill watch it again for Halloween.

It is strongly hinted to be Childs in multiple ways, the most concrete evidence is that when Mac gives him the bottle he drinks it without a care if its been infected, and the score has an ominous synth beat that kicks in when the thing is about to attack.

Less concrete evidence is Childs is also shot with no eye gleam or frost breath, when Mac talks the frost from his breath is significant and covers his face, Childs has none. There are other theories but I wont list them all.

The shot of the dog walking the halls and then into the room of somebody who we cant see is soooo awesome.

Also the shot of the dog staring out the window at the helicopter, no panting or moving its eyes, just being.....still. Chills, man.

if the ps2 sequel game is canon then it confirms that neither of them were a thing

For one Carpenter said they left no intentional clues with eyes or breath in that scene to decipher who is the Thing. Second if the game is still canon which it was at one point, neither Childs or Macready is the Thing.

The flamethrower itself was secretly a Thing all along.

Every time I try to watch The Thing on amazon prime it just gives me a black screen and sits there until I turn my TV off. Every other movie Ive tried works fine :(

What disappoints me the most about that movie is that it originally had practical effects, but most of it was replaced in post-production by CGI. They literally edited out all the work the effects guys put into the film.

^ That i didnt know. That sucks. I'd be so pissed if i was one of those guys.

Aged better than its release, frankly. There was an oversaturation of gory horror movies, and it bombed with critics and audiences.

Even people who saw it at the time thought it was just another gory schlockfest with no real depth, but when there's so much stuff like that coming out, I can understand how people wouldn't be able to appreciate it on its own merits. A lot of people thought the same with Predator at the time too because of the overabundance of commando movies.

Even setting aside the game, there's really no reason to believe that either of them is the Thing. The breath theory doesn't really hold because not only can you see Childs's breath at various points, but the entire theory rests upon the Thing suddenly becoming dumb enough to forget to breathe, when it's been making perfect copies of people for the entire movie.

I like to think that Macready tricked Childs Thing into drinking gasoline at the end offering it as alcohol. The Thing wouldn't have the proper reaction to drinking it. and it would be a nice callback to the beginning of the movie where he pours his beer on the chess computer to "beat" it.
