I'd bet that Ali had more global recognition.

Nobody cares about basketball outside of Canada and the USA. Golf is even less popular; Tiger Woods was famous for being so incredibly more talented than any other golfer along with being so young.

Yeah its Ronaldo/Messi and it's not even close. Only person that might be on that level is Bolt but he's kept a relatively low profile since he retired. Federer is still pretty high up there too and still playing.

What about Agassi? He had a pretty big following in east Asia when he was playing.

Nah its definitely Michael Jordan lol everyone knows Jordan the world over. Theres no one iconic footballer internationally who crosses generations like MJ does.

you could argue messi or Ronaldo but older generations would argue pele or maradona, thered be no argument with Jordan - even from people outside the US.

In all seriousness, wouldn't the most recognized athlete in the world be Pel? I mean, I've never had even the slightest interest in soccer but I've heard of him. He was selected Athlete of the Century by the IOC, holds the Guinness World Record for number of goals, and was the highest-paid athlete in the world at one point.

(Holy crap, Pel turned 80 just a couple weeks ago!)
