the winner was just based on national popular vote.

The whole "my vote doesn't mean anything" rhetoric would be dead, at least.

seems likely since the way the system is now your vote literally doesn't mean anything unless the majority of people in your state agree with you

People would recognize that they're vote actually counts and yes, that would increase voter turnout. It's a done deal by 2024, all of the progressive gen-zr's would dominate that popular vote.

California and New York would immediately make it impossible for a Republican to eve rwin again.

This is a terrible analogy.

It blows my mind that the same Republicans who whine that the EC is essential to ensure the coasts dont decide for everyone dont seem to realize that if they live in a solidly blue state their vote is useless

It would certainly take the sting out of waiting three hours to vote if it meant anything.

That said, one of the state amendments I voted for passed, so it wasn't a complete waste.

You described popular vote. A voter pool of 3. 2 votes for one option, 1 vote for another. The option with 2 votes wins.

You need an intermediary layer to represent the EC, that distorts the value of single votes.

EC is like saying you and your two siblings voted for BK but your parents both voted for McD and they go since we matter more, our votes are worth double so we win you lose and they get McD for dinner

You and your brother whom you share a room with want Wendy's. Your sister, who is an uneducated hick, wants McDonald's. Since her bedroom is bigger, you have to have MxDonalds.
